Hanoi: 5 killed by explosives left over from the Vietnam War

Hanoi - 5 killed by explosives left over from the Vietnam War

5 killed by explosives left over from the Vietnam War - International Herald Tribune

Five people, including three children, died in central Vietnam when 30-year-old unexploded ordnance left behind from the Vietnam War exploded, police and state media reported Friday.
Three boys, aged 12 to 14, were killed in an explosion Thursday in the Hai Lang district of Quang Tri province, said a district police officer who identified himself only as Binh.
The boys discovered four unexploded bombs in bushes while looking after water buffaloes and the explosives went off when they examined them, he said.
Authorities suspect that farmers may have found the bombs while plowing their rice fields and put them in the bushes.

The area was a communist stronghold during the war and was heavily bombarded.

On Tuesday, two men aged 19 and 31 were killed in the central highlands province of Kon Tum when an artillery shell they were cutting up for scrap metal exploded, Friday's Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper reported.
The explosion also left the wife of the 19-year-old man seriously injured, the report said.
About 38,000 people have been killed by unexploded ordnance since the end of the Vietnam War in 1975, according to government figures.

Note: if you see an artillary shell do not try to cut it up for scrap metal. Also, do not play with it.

Yea, it is them fucking Americans [Yanks],, They are the only ones that used bombs or any exploding ordinance in any war so it has to be them dirty pricks that left it, some they rigged to stay inactive for a set number of years and then to lay in wait for women and children and then blow up when any were found to be near.

If the American army had designed the bombs to do that, the only certainty would be, that they would not work

No, but the the US is one of the countries that hasn't signed the Ottawa Treaty (that they will not use, develop, manufacture, stockpile or trade anti-personnel land mines). Keeping such illustrious company as Iran, Russia and North Korea in continuing to manufacture anti-personnel land mines.

Interestingly Viet Nam has not ratified the treaty and continues to produce these mines also.

Just being facetious Tud, but they are talking about Bombs, not AP land mines, if farmers would have plowed up some APs they sure as hell would have known it.

^ I know, I was just making a point. I doubt there would be mines that far North anyway.

^ sure, a brave effort by the frogs, but they made the fatal mistake of believing the troops on the battlefield could be continuously resupplied and reinforced from the air.
The Americans almost replicated that glorious defeat by doing the same thing at Khe Sanh.

Who knows which side these explosives belonged to. They could have been dropped by anyone running through the rice fields at that time. I'll admit that the likelyhood that the bombs came from the US is high but it's not certain.

OK TUD, but you do know that Eisenhower/Nixon were in command of the white house at the time and did promise DeGaul [sp] that he could go ahead and they would have planes in the air to resupply his troops at Dien Bin Phu as long as they needed it, and the prick did not show up, them poor frogs stood there looking up and not one fucking plane came.
Then they lost the whitehouse and Kennedy had to go in and do what was promised by the Pres before him, so he takes the heat for being the bad guy of the Viet Nam war.
And I, the fine dude I am only averaged a dose of clap every 3 months, for the duration.
