On May 15th, 2025, residents along Sukhumvit Road in Naklua were gripped by fear after thick clouds of smoke billowed from beneath the Naklua Bridge. Fearing a potential disaster, locals urgently alerted authorities and relevant officials to investigate.
Mr. Supharerk Chomphunuch, a Pattaya City Council member for District 1, responded to the scene and shared details via his Facebook page, “Big Supharerk Chomphunuch.” While inspecting water flow into the Naklua Canal, he noticed smoke rising from under the bridge. Initially smelling a foul odor akin to rotten eggs, he approached closer and identified the smell of burning electrical cables. Deciding to investigate further, he crossed the road and ventured beneath the bridge.
At the site, Mr. Supharerk discovered a homeless man cooking food and burning electrical cables, likely to extract copper or other metals. The area was littered with remnants of electrical equipment and communication signal boxes.
Local residents reported that the area under the Naklua Bridge has long been a hotspot for suspicious activities involving homeless individuals and, occasionally, foreign tourists possibly linked to drug use or theft from nearby businesses, such as car wash shops or repair garages.
Mr. Supharerk has coordinated with Pattaya Mayor Mr. Poramese Ngampichet to urgently address safety concerns and implement measures to tackle the issue in the area.
