British teenager who vanished in Thailand is found in Georgia, arrested.

Adds a new twist to the old "Have you seen...." pleas. Still, she probably qualifies as an "influencer" now.

A British teenager who was reported missing while on holiday in Thailand has been arrested 6500km away in a shocking turn of events.

18-year-old Bella May Culley triggered a massive international search operation this week as she hadn’t been in touch with her family since Saturday.

It has now been revealed that the teen from Teesside was actually arrested in Georgia, a country in Eastern Europe, on suspicion of drug offences.

Her father rushed to Bangkok, where she was believed to have been staying, in a desperate attempt to track down his daughter, after several failed attempts to reach the teen, who is said to have switched off her phone.

After contacting the immigration bureau to establish where Ms Culley was last staying, the horrific news came that she had been arrested in Georgia on drug offences.

Footage shared by a Georgian news outlet shows Ms Culley being directed through the Central Criminal Police Department in the capital of Tbilisi in handcuffs.

Ms Culley was allegedly found with 14kg of cannabis, which police say was flagged during a security check after arriving at Tbilisi International Airport.

The country’s Interior Ministry said the committed crime could result in ‘20 years or life imprisonment.’

Ms Culley originally flew out to the Philippines after Easter with a friend and was there for three weeks, according to her mum Lyanne who spoke to local newspaper, Teesside Live.

“She was posting loads of pictures and then she went to Thailand on about May 3,” she said.

“The last message she sent was to me and that was on Saturday at 5.30pm saying she was going to Facetime me later.

“I just want her home and safe and to hear her gorgeous little voice.”

Lyanne told The Sun that when her daughter’s friend went to Ibiza, Ms Culley decided to travel to Thailand because “she doesn’t drink that much and isn’t really into the party lifestyle.”

“I really didn’t want her to go to Thailand.

“I begged her to come home.”

It remains a mystery as to how Ms Culley ended up in Georgia.

Some Chad was dicking her better than she'd ever had and she agreed to take his cannabis to Georgia. There's a huge discount for being a white chick when you're in front of a judge so she isn't going to be sentenced as harshly as her Chad would have been.

British teenager reported missing in Thailand is arrested in Georgia
Police reveal Bella May Culley, 18, has been detained thousand of miles away from where she vanished

    THE TELEGRAPH

strange that she was arrested for marijuana offences when the drug is legal there, although i suppose arriving with 14kgms of the stuff would likely raise a few eyebrows, but you've got to pay for your holidays somehow. needs must and all that.

i suspect that the thunder-thighed bint will be back home in cleveland before too long.

“she doesn’t drink that much and isn’t really into the party lifestyle.”

Since independence, Georgia maintained harsh policies against drugs, handing out lengthy sentences even for marijuana use. This came under criticism from human rights activists and led to protests.

In response to lawsuits from civil society organizations, in 2018 the Constitutional Court of Georgia ruled that "consumption of marijuana is an action protected by the right to free personality" and that "[Marijuana] can only harm the user's health, making that user him/herself responsible for the outcome. The responsibility for such actions does not cause dangerous consequences for the public."

With this ruling, Georgia became one of the first countries in the world to legalize cannabis, although using the drug in the presence of children is still illegal and punishable by fines or imprisonment. Georgian prisons tend to be overcrowded with poor living conditions.

Although recreational use is legal, the amount you can possess is very limited, the maximum I have seen in articles is 10gr, most other reports suggest a maximum of 3 to 5 gr. I also severely doubt that importing is not a criminal offense.

She is fucked, as Georgia imposes REALLY long sentences for drug crimes, and the conviction rate is nearly 100%.

Surely not the sharpest tool in the box. No way she has the smarts to buy drugs in Thailand and sell them in Georgia - a country to which she has no reported connections.
Young and gullible, someone smarter spotted her potential. She's a mule. I feel a bit sorry for her.

I feel a bit sorry for her.
she has travelled and there is no way she would be ignorant of the fact that gangs use mules to move drugs around and it is the mules that always suffer when caught. there is no cure for stupid.

Authorities still have many questions after a British teenager who disappeared while travelling in Thailand before being arrested 4,000 miles away in Tbilisi, Georgia.

Bella May Culley, 18, was arrested at Tbilisi International Airport in possession of “34 hermetically sealed packages containing marijuana … as well as 20 packages of hashish”, according to local media. She had originally not been heard from since last Saturday, when she failed to check in with her mother, Lyanne Kennedy, as planned while she was travelling southeast Asia.

The Georgian interior ministry says the teenager is facing life imprisonment, which is 20 years.

A statement read: “B.K, born in 2006, is charged with illegally purchasing and storing a particularly large amount of narcotics, illegally purchasing and storing the narcotic drug marijuana, and illegally importing it into Georgia. The committed crime envisions up to 20 years – or life imprisonment.”

A British Foreign Office spokesperson confirmed that Ms Culley had been detained in Georgia and that they were supporting the teenager’s family. Cleveland police have also confirmed that Ms Culley had been detained in Georgia.

Her family first launched an appeal for the missing teenager on Tuesday morning. Her father, Neil Culley and aunt flew out to Bangkok over the weekend to find out more about Ms Culley’s whereabouts, only to discover that she was in Georgia.

Here’s everything we know so far about Ms Culley’s case.

The 18-year-old is from Billingham, County Durham. She reportedly had hopes of becoming a nurse after finishing an access course at Middlesbrough College

The teenager had remained in close contact with her family during her trip and was meant to check in with her mother on Saturday at 5.30pm for a Facetime, but never did.

“That was the last message anyone has received from what we can figure out up to now,” said Ms Kennedy. “I’m just waiting on her dad who is now in Bangkok to get back with any more information. I just want her home and safe or to hear her gorgeous little voice.”

“She loves all the touristy stuff, like releasing turtles."

Ms Culley has reportedly told prosecutors in Georgia that she is pregnant. Her state-appointed lawyer revealed that “She told the court and later me as well that she is pregnant", according to The Mirror.

The lawyer continued in a statement: "This was her first time in the court and she was terrified and confused, kind of lost. Because of that we decided to exercise the right to remain silent. In a few days, after we’ve had consultations and discussions, we’ll decide whether and how to adjust this position. New lawyers, private ones, both Georgian and British, will soon be involved and more details will be told."

What was she doing in Thailand?

The teenager had decided to travel southeast Asia after finishing her course at Middlesbrough College. Her mother told Teesside Live that her daughter flew to the Philippines after Easter with a friend and was there for three weeks. “She was posting loads of pictures,” Ms Kennedy said.

Her mother told The Sun that the decision to go to Thailand wasn’t planned, but when her friend decided to go to Ibiza, Bella decided to head in a different direction because “she doesn't drink that much and isn't really into the party lifestyle.”

She went to Thailand on 3 May, reportedly to meet friends she’d made on a previous trip that her mother didn’t know.

    Why is she in Georgia?

After going missing in Thailand, Bella resurfaced at Tbilisi International Airport, where she was arrested for possessing 30lbs of cannabis. One of her charges is illegally importing the narcotic into Georgia. It remains unclear how and why she ended up 4,000 miles away from her holiday destination.

Bella’s grandfather, 80-year-old William Culley, suggested to The Mirror that his granddaughter must have been taken advantage of.

“She's not daft, she's an intelligent girl. Why has she done it? Has someone dangled money in front of her? We just don't know what has gone on until we get out there and talk to her. We are just hoping that somebody can do something. She must be terrified.”

    What consequences does Bella face?

The prosecutor has asked for 55 days to find evidence before the case is brought to trial. She faces up to 20 years - or life imprisonment - if found guilty for illegally purchasing and storing the drugs and illegally importing it into Georgia.

Bella would be imprisoned in the country’s only women’s prison, Prison No.5, located outside the town of Rustavi, a 45-minute drive from the capital. It houses nearly all of the country’s female prison population, according to Penal Rights International. The jail comprises a series of cell blocks and training facilities, where women can participate in courses such as traditional Georgian felt making, beauty therapy and hairdressing.

The prison has been subject to controversy and less than 20 years ago at least seven prisoners were killed and 17 injured during a disturbance which led to force from law enforcement agents, including special forces, according to the Human Rights Watch.

She probably did not even know that she was a mule. Why would they tell her? It is easy to be cynical but I have seen it before. She'll still get a long prison sentence.

Only that? Only one case? Was it locked? No one is disputing that she was caught red-handed. She will be tried and convicted. Which doesn't make her a cartel mastermind. She could have acted knowingly, for money or for love. I am betting on some back story. Lock her up then send her home after a year or two.

i agree with you, but that's not the point.

there are things called laws, and if they are not fit for purpose then they should be changed, either by political will or as a response to an outcry from the population.
neither of those two things have occurred and so the law must stand and be upheld. if laws are not upheld then chaos and anarchy will ensue.

is would be impossible to believe that a 22 year old experienced backpacker would think that importing 22 kilos of cannabis into any country would be without consequences.

so let her be prosecuted according to the law.

Yes she may have been posing for a photo but anyone importing that amount of weed into a country without declaring at customs to pay the excess tax is even more of a stupid bitch.
Fascists dress in black and go around telling people what to do, whereas priests... more drink!

Brit teenager Bella May Culley could raise a baby in a Georgian prison, it has emerged tonight. The nursing student could also spend nine months behind bars as authorities investigate whether she smuggled drugs into the country.

The 18-year-old from Billingham, Teesside, was apprehended when her luggage was allegedly found to contain dozens of bags of cannabis and hashish. Prosecutors have asked for 55 days to find evidence to build a case against her, although this could be extended by up to seven months. She stunned the courtroom in the Georgian capital Tbilisi when she claimed to be pregnant.

Should Culley be found guilty, she could face a life sentence. Her family raced to Georgia following her detainment after she was reported missing from Thailand.

    Lawyer speaks out
Bella Culley's lawyer la Todua said their client has "the right" to demand a visit from her family.

"She has the right to demand this short-term visit from her family, through the decision of the prosecution," said Ms Todua according to the BBC. "She's not cut off from outside contact. She is allowed small meetings."
Ms Todua was appointed by the state to represent the British teen.

    Potential visit from father
Bella Culley faces a four-day wait to find out if she can see her father.

Bella's father Niel lives in Vietnam but retains a property in Billingham, Co Durham. He could see his daughter for up to an hour, according to her lawyer.

Bella May Culley 'trapped in isolation' with grim prison fate resting on three things
James Pipe, a legal expert at Felons Assistance, warns that conditions in these prisons can cause foreign nationals to become isolated due to "language barriers", adding: "This can have a serious impact on their mental health and ability to build a legal defence."

He explains: "Ultimately, what's in store for her hinges on three key factors: the progress of the foreign trial, diplomatic pressure from the UK government, and any formal legal agreements between the two countries." He adds: "Until then, she’s likely to remain detained under that country’s rules, in their system, and that could mean facing a very different standard of justice and care than we’re used to here in Britain."

Three unanswered questions in Bella May Culley case
    - Is Bella May Culley really pregnant?

Culley reportedly claimed she was pregnant in Tbilisi on Tuesday. Georgian officials will now carry out a medical examination to assess the veracity of her claims.

    - Who is 'Clyde' mentioned on her social media?

The Brit student boasted of a "Bonnie and Clyde" lifestyle on her TikTok profile.
Bonnie and Clyde were an infamous crime couple who became known for their bank robberies and crime spree in 1930s America.

    - How did Bella May Culley get 'sucked in'?

It is not clear how Culley ended up in the situation she finds herself in. Her family have rubbished any notion that she is a drug trafficker.

    04:44
Six clues Bella May Culley left before going missing
    - 'Bonnie and Clyde' references

Bella likened herself to Bonnie from the infamous criminal duo Bonnie and Clyde, posting about engaging in "criminal activities side by side" and "making heavy figures."

    - Displaying large sums of cash

In other TikTok videos, Bella showcased stacks of £10 and £20 notes, bound together with a hairband. Those who viewed the videos questioned where the stash had come from.

    - Smoking cannabis on camera

Bella was also seen smoking what appeared to be cannabis while riding in the back of a car.

    - Association with a man named 'Russ'

Bella mentioned meeting a man named "Russ" or "Ross" during her travels in the Philippines. This individual remains unidentified, but authorities are investigating his potential connection to Bella's subsequent activities

While traveling in Thailand, Bella ceased communication with her family, prompting them to report her missing on Saturday. Her unexpected silence raised concerns about her wellbeing initially.

    - Social media posts

Bella's TikTok content included references to drug culture and dealing, with captions and imagery that suggested involvement in illicit activities.

Inside 'degrading' women's prison where Bella could be held
If Bella May Culley is handed a lengthy prison sentence, she can expect to be housed in Tbilisi's infamous Women's Prison Number 5 - a Soviet-era detention facility known for its 'degrading' treatment of inmates.

Prisoners are crammed into single bunk beds with multiple women to a single cell, and the building is said to be in a state of considerably decay.

One inspection procedure even sees inmates forced to squat in front of guards, something can be particularly distressing when they are menstruating

In 2018, a report from Penal Reform International Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning Officer said of the facility: "The prison comprises a series of cell blocks and training facilities as well as an administrative building, all within tarmacked grounds where women hang up washing or use the public telephones.

"Each cell block has its own training room, where women can participate in courses such as traditional Georgian felt making, beauty therapy and hairdressing.

"There is also a sewing enterprise run by Women in Business, where around 50 women are employed under a contract with the Ministry of Corrections to make mattresses for men's prisons.

"The women can earn a wage, which they can either send to their families outside or spend on themselves in prison."

Bella could be sent to Tbilisi's Women's Prison No.5

Mystery over why Bella suddenly disappeared in Thailand sparking search
While traveling in Thailand, Bella ceased communication with her family, prompting them to report her missing on Saturday.

Her unexpected silence raised concerns about her wellbeing initially.

Bella’s father Niel - who lives in Vietnam but searched for her in Thailand after she vanished - has flown to Tbilisi and his attempts to see her in jail were blocked by red tape on Wednesday.

He had hoped for an emotional heart-to-heart at the grim No5 Women’s Penitentiary on the outskirts of the city but was told essential paperwork had not been signed.

Mr Culley, 49, arrived in Georgian capital Tbilisi seeking answers as family members told how he was suffering "every parent’s worst nightmare." He was being supported by his sister, Kellie Culley while Bella’s mum Lyanne Kennedy - who is estranged from Niel - awaited news in the UK.

Mystery continues to surround a man 'she went to see in Philippines'
Bella mentioned meeting a man named "Russ" or "Ross" during her travels in the Philippines.

This individual remains unidentified, but authorities are investigating his potential connection to Bella's subsequent activities.

The backpacker’s social media went on to show her clearly in the company of a male stranger - but he was never clearly pictured or named.

Her grandad William Culley, 80, revealed that she appears to have spent most of March in Thailand but also spent time in the Philippines with a man called "Ross or Russ", adding: "She's got sucked into something, somehow."

He said: "She went to the Philippines to see somebody, a lad there, who she used to go out with a couple of years ago, who was working out there.

"She said, 'I'm going on my own, but I'm meeting Ross out there. Or Russ, I'm not sure what his name is. He was working out there for his father's company or something. But now I wonder if what she told me was true."

TikTok video displaying large sums of cash
Bella showcased stacks of £10 and £20 notes, bound together with a hairband, in a TikTok video. Those who viewed the clips questioned where the stash had come from.

Georgian police claim she was caught with 34 bags of weed, totalling around 14 kilos of the banned substance. In a video displaying the cash, she captioned the video, "But nothing hurts when I'm with you," alongside money bag emojis.

Bella was also seen smoking what appeared to be cannabis while riding in the back of a car. She appeared in court on Wednesday after being detained at the city’s airport on suspicion of hiding 34 bags of cannabis in her luggage.

Airport staff had stopped her on the way in and allegedly found the cannabis in her luggage. The aspiring nurse could face 20 years in an overcrowded former Soviet prison or even a life sentence, the country's Interior Ministry said.

Taking the stand on Wednesday, she told the court she was pregnant before adding she would reserve the right to remain silent. She is said to be "confused and terrified".

'Bonnie and Clyde' references by Bella before she was arrested
Bella likened herself to Bonnie from the infamous criminal duo Bonnie and Clyde, posting about engaging in "criminal activities side by side" and "making heavy figures."

In one video, she posted a clip of herself alongside the caption: "Blonde or brunette? Erm how about we get up to criminal activities side by side like Bonnie n Clyde making heavy figures and f****** on balconies all over the world."

Another video is captioned: "Don’t care if we on the run baby as long as I’m next to u."

But Bella’s male companion’s face never appears in the posts and he is never tagged. Family members have claimed she met a group of young men from the north west of England in Thailand before she was reported missing on Saturday.

Did Bella get 'sucked' into illegal activity?
It is not clear how Bella ended up in the situation she finds herself in with drugs allegedly discovered in her bag when she entered Georgia.

Her family have rubbished any notion that she is a drug trafficker.

"She’s got sucked into something, somehow," her granddad William Culley said. "She’s not an international drug trafficker. Can she even tell them who's given her the drugs to take over?

"I bet she doesn't. These people keep out of the way. It’s all just very strange and at the moment we just don’t have any answers. We don’t know what to think."

After being told Culley had been detained in Georgia, William added: "I said, ‘in jail? what's she doing in jail? And then she said, ‘drugs’. I couldn’t believe it. Who the hell has she been with?

"She was on holiday with some friends, doing what 18-year-olds do - drinking and dancing. They must have met somebody who's taken advantage of her."
