The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued a nationwide advisory warning of unstable weather conditions as the country begins its transition from summer to the rainy season. The alert, issued on May 7, covers shifting weather patterns expected to bring heavy rain, strong winds, and intermittent hail in several regions over the coming days.
From now through May 11, northern Thailand will continue to experience extreme heat, especially in Tak, Mae Hong Son, and Lampang provinces. The northeast is likely to see scattered hailstorms as storm activity increases. Rainfall will become more widespread during this period as wind directions shift, affecting weather systems across much of the country.
The southern region, especially along the Andaman Coast, is expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall from May 9 to 11. The north and northeast are forecast to experience moderate to heavy rain during the same period. In Bangkok and surrounding provinces, frequent showers are likely to continue, especially during early mornings and late afternoons.
Meteorological officials are closely observing wind patterns and rainfall distribution to determine whether the official criteria for the start of the rainy season have been met. Once confirmed, the department will formally declare the beginning of the new season.
Long-term forecasts suggest that rainfall this year will be near the seasonal average, with reasonably good distribution despite occasional dry spells. Some parts of the northeast may experience a temporary decrease in rainfall toward the end of May. Authorities have advised local areas receiving rain this week to store water while it remains available, as rainfall is expected to return more steadily from July onward.
