Thailand to Test New Emergency Alert System

Authorities have scheduled the nation’s first Cell Broadcast tests to ensure readiness ahead of full-scale emergency alert deployment.

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM), in collaboration with six agencies, announced the readiness for Thailand’s first nationwide Cell Broadcast emergency alert system tests. The tests will take place on May 2, 7, and 13, 2025, across various regions, aiming to improve the accuracy and speed of alerts delivered to the public.

Phasakorn Boonyalak, Director-General of DDPM, chaired the press conference. The tests will involve three levels of alerts: small-scale (within buildings), medium-scale (district level), and large-scale (provincial level). The purpose is to assess inter-agency coordination and technical reliability of the system to provide timely and accurate alerts to residents in risk areas.

Representatives from the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society, the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission, Advanced Info Service, True Corporation, National Telecom, and Aranya Ketkaew, Deputy Director-General of the Public Relations Department, were also present.

The tests will simulate real emergency broadcasts. Messages will automatically appear on mobile phone screens along with loud alert tones. The message will read: “This is a test message from the DDPM. No action required.” Notifications will be issued in both Thai and English to help prevent panic among the public.

After each test, involved agencies will assess performance and identify areas for improvement. These evaluations will be used to fine-tune both the system’s technical performance and procedural coordination for future use.

The test plan is as follows:
-Small-scale test (indoor): May 2 at 1:00 PM in Chiang Rai, Ubon Ratchathani, Suphan Buri, Songkhla Provincial Halls, and Government Complex Building A and B in Bangkok.

-Medium-scale test (district level): May 7 at 1:00 PM in Mueang Districts of Lampang, Nakhon Sawan, Nakhon Ratchasima, Surat Thani, and Din Daeng District, Bangkok.

-Large-scale test (provincial level): May 13 at 1:00 PM in Chiang Mai, Udon Thani, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Nakhon Si Thammarat, and Bangkok.
