No more scout uniforms for Thai students in new academic year

The Ministry of Education plans to end the requirement for Thai students to wear scout uniforms once a week in the new academic year, to ease the financial burden on parents.

Deputy Education Minister Surasak Phancharoenworakul said yesterday that he expects an announcement to this effect to be issued by the National Scout Office this month.

According to the Education Ministry’s current rules, there are three scout outfits, namely the full uniform, the gym clothes and casual dress. Management of each school can choose any of the three models to fit in with their circumstances and environments, but with just the scarf as the symbol of scouts.

    Dib dib Don't

With no brothers I loved my time in scouts, hiking, games, camping with other classmates in beautiful places like Knowle Deer Park, Asdown Forest. I know their were some abused in other places and a bit militaristic but I found it character forming and made good friends.
I doubt many would be interested in the ropey activities, learning the knots was great help when I moved on to sailing.I learned CPR , first aid, baking and fishing all in all happy memories.

Yeah but they don't do that shit at scouts in Thailand. Just sit around listening to chief scout drone on and then a bit of marching.

Indeed, a lot of standing and sitting around. They did a hike around town once a year, amazingly some managed to get lost within a mile of school.
It always looked like a prep for the military volunteers in M4,5 and 6.

Scouts in the UK ain't what it was. Stupidly they have tried to "move with the times" and try to make it relevant to the online generation when they should get the lazy cbnts off their phones and doing outdoor activities and talking in person. The scouts is probably more relevant and needed than it ever has been. Imo.

The article doesn't say whether they will still do scouts activity once a week, only without uniform. They'd benefit from more time in the classroom.
Whoever paints all those pointless red sticks will go out of business.

One of my fond memories of being in the Girl Scouts is learning how to rappel. First, it was for scout leaders' training - we rapelled down the side of a 2-storey building. (It was for a scout leaders' training weekend.)

Then towards the end of the school year, we had our camping weekend at a campsite in the mountains. We (all the scouts, male & female) had to rappel down the side of a mountain. There were guides/ elders to monitor us. Some of my schoolmates were really frightened and cried their hearts out while in mid descent. I was at the base of the path, inwardly cursing them coz they took so much time and the rest of us were waiting for our turn. Lol. Good memories.

For my nephew, he had a camping weekend in school I think, as part of Boy Scouts. I think he was in 5th or 6th grade then. It was held at their school grounds - they pitched tents on the school grassy area. I don't know if grade school students still do camping activities for scouting in PH nowadays.

^ Exactly Katie. Scouts is or should be about getting out and experiencing new things, developing skills, challenging yourself and making new friends. The fact some of the activities are very analogue is the whole point, it's about getting off your arse and away from mummy.

Less subliminal para-military consciousness can only be a good thing for the little darlings.
Now we have to focus on ridding ourselves of the protocol of indoctrination honoring a particular patriarchy every morning.

Both have little use regarding education and critical thinking.

My interpretation of the text in the article is that the weekly scouting activities will continue as before but without the full scout uniforms. The only part of the scout uniform that will remain will be the scout scarf. Schools will decide whether their students will wear their school uniform, gym clothes or casual dress with their scout scarf for the scouting activities.

we all know an educated citizenry with critical thinking is the last thing anybody (except the PP) want in Thailand. Better to waste school time with parades, singing anthems, military cadets and sports days than teach somebody how to think. That's why none will get scrapped.

Welcome the fact that it's one less item I have to buy.
Can't even begin to cost how many uniforms and sports kits I've had to buy for the extended family over the years...

I did like the green though.
