Ax meets knife in battle of brothers

KAMALA: Five men were hospitalized after a bloody fight following an accusation of attempted rape at a Kamala construction site workers’ camp on Monday night.

Pol Sub Lt Charnsarawut Saeng-aroon of Kamala Police Station reported that the fight, involving an ax and a 12-inch blade, broke out between two pairs of brothers after the wife of a construction worker alleged that another worker had attempted to rape her.

“Brothers Cherngchao and Damnern Suksamran, 24 and 22 respectively, and brothers Suthat and Suwat Janmeedee, 28 and 26 respectively, work together at a construction camp in Village 6, Kamala,” said Lt Charnsarawut.

“At about 7 pm on Monday night, Suthat allegedly made an unwanted passionate advance towards Nong Jaeng, the wife of Cherngchao, at the workers’ camp near the construction site. Nong Jaeng ran screaming from Suthat, claiming that he had attempted to rape her,” added Lt Charnsarawut.

“Cherngchao and Damnern then arrived at the camp and the two pairs of brothers faced off and began fighting,” he said.

“Cherngchao and Damner were armed with one ax between them, while the Janmeedee brothers had a knife about one-foot long,” said Lt Charnsarawut.

“Songwut Phanet, 25, a mutual friend of the group, tried to break up the fight. He received a knife blow to the head for his troubles. He is being treated at Patong Hospital, where he is listed in serious condition,” said Lt Charnsarawut.

“During the fight, Cherngchao lost a finger on his left hand, Damnern sustained wounds to his head and torso, Suthat was wounded by ax blows to his head and torso. Suwat received a number of gashes on his hands courtesy of the Suksamran brothers’ ax,” he added.

“All of the men are in Patong Hospital at the moment so I have been unable to investigate this case yet,” said Lt Charnsarawut, who was unable to reveal further details.
