Norwegian Man Dies After Falling from 16th Floor of Pattaya Condominium

A 88-year-old Norwegian man tragically fell to his death from the 16th floor of a condominium complex in Pattaya on the afternoon of August 8th, 2024.

At 3:30 PM on August 8th, Pattaya Police received a report of a person falling from a high condominium building in the Jomtien area of Nongprue sub-district, Banglamung district, Chonburi province. After being notified, police coordinated with rescue workers and went to the scene.

At the scene, the body of Mr. Jan Asbjorn Hauge, an 88-year-old Norwegian national, was found on the rooftop of a beer bar on the third floor adjacent to the condominium. The rescue team retrieved the body from the rooftop down to the ground using a crane. No signs of foul play or physical assault were found.

The deceased’s Thai wife (name withheld to protect her privacy) told police that the victim had been suffering from kidney disease and had never shown signs of intending to take his own life before. On the day of the incident, she noticed he was unusually quiet and, while she was cooking in the kitchen, he jumped from the 16th floor, landing on the rooftop of the adjacent beer bar. The wife was shocked and almost fainted upon witnessing the event. After regaining her composure, she contacted the authorities.

Pattaya Police found no signs of struggle or violence in the deceased’s room. It is initially suspected that the victim was motivated by stress related to his illness. The body has been sent to the Police General Hospital’s forensic institute for a thorough autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. Police are contacting the victim’s embassy.

insurance coverage for treatment for kidney disease, especially if dialysis is required , is incredibly hard to obtain for foreigners in thailand, especially for an 88 year old. later stages of kidney disease can be very unpleasant.

for foreigners who have burnt bridges to their homeland, advancing age and the inevitable health problems that crop up will invariably result in very difficult choices to be faced, especially if finances to pay the thai hospitals and their quacks are insufficient.

rather than face an uncomfortable and degrading end the poor chap decided to jump. ending it all in a few seconds rather than suffer months of slowly failing organs, blood poisoning and repeated invasive catheterisations.

brave fellow, but 88 is a good innings and i hope his was a life well lived.

I tend to agree DW. Its inconsiderate for not only the unsuspecting passerby, but the clean up crew and of course the likely loss of business.

Agree Tax. Honestly as many foreigners that take swan dives in Pattaya, they should just make a location with a platform and a cement slab with a drain in the middle to wash it all away and then an incinerator near it and just burn them or offer a euthanasia process to stop these fkrs from jumping.

That's a pretty solid beer bar.
