Lisa’s “ROCKSTAR” music video reached 35 million views by noon

The promo video for Thai K-pop sensation Lisa’s latest solo release “ROCKSTAR”, which was filmed in Bangkok’s Chinatown, had logged 35 million views by midday today.

Thai and foreign fans of Lalisa “Lisa” Manoban have, however, vowed to push that to 100 million pretty soon.

The video, which portrays the usually bustling Yaowarat Road as eerily quiet and dark, with some dim neon lighting a single spot where Lisa performed in the video, has become a magnet for many Thai female fans, several dressed like Lisa in the video, who queue up at the spot to take selfies.

The place was even more crowded than usual last night. Food vendors said they did good business and expect more tonight. They hailed Lisa as an real example of Thailand’s “soft power”.

Thanawat Wongsuk said that he was asked to bring his Harley Davidson bike for use in the shoot, not knowing that it was for Lisa. When she finally arrived on set, to sing and dance with the other performers, he says was speechless, but proud to be a part of the show.

Many other unnamed Thais, including some tattooed bikers, known as the “gangsters”, were also featured.

Details of the filming were kept so confidential that no one outside the production team knew that the hugely popular Thai rapper, of the former Blackpink Korean girl group, would be the star of the show.

Not really my preference either, but a nicely edited video with a few special effects and reasonable choreography.

Blackpinks are even better MV's the problem is when live on stage it's not possible to re create that visual experience and the performance can look a bit flat. Lisa's last release now has over one billion views from last year, so not everyone is yawning.

Like most modern bubblegum, tin pan alley, rap shit, the act is essentially a triumph of form over function with spectacle and production techniques compensating for a lack of talent of any worth. The current so-called headlining acts at Glastonbury are a celebration of this ghastly phenomenon where if one were to strip away the artifice there would be nothing but a dull, flat mediocrity.

Truly it is the era of The Stupid.

They are catalogued between bubblegum and tin pan alley. That they are now, for the fifth time, a headline act just shows how far festival music has become a joke.

Christ, any number of Bath Blues Festival acts in 1970 would have been headliners today viz, Pink Floyd, Steppenwolf, Jefferson Airplane, Santana, Led Zeppelin, Frank Zappa.

The talent then was extraordinary, today it is essentially pap for vacuous morons and pubescent children.

But there are great musicians and talent today, it’s just rap garage bubblegum twaddle has taken over the festival circuit.

Shania Twain, Cindi Lauper …….fucking legends!?

I saw QOTSA performance of “No one knows” last year at Glastonbury. Now that was music.

Ohh that prick went much further on box ticking than fox. Female disabled piano player on for a stint- tick. A host ethnics in tribal garb- tick. Getting all the ladies in the audience to sing- tick. Fuk me it was dire. The only thing I was surprised by was he didn't nosh himself off on stage.

@harry - I agree with Eddie. That was indeed a groufie/ groupfie/ wefie. I'm afraid it's now a "dope" thing to do. (ugh! Lol)

I watched Lisa's vid on YT. It now has 49M views, so kudos to her & her marketing team! The choreo was good but the song wasn't too catchy.

As for Lisa, she's a great dancer and OK rapper. However, she doesn't write her own raps and can't do freestyle rap, unlike Nicki Minaj. Nicki has her own faults but she can freestyle rap, so good on her. As a singer, Lisa is passable, IMO. Her songs always have auto tune. She's a good performer and a hard worker. She speaks Thai, English, Korean and Japanese, so good on her.

I think anyone who has survived and thrived under those Kpop training programmes are all good, in their own ways. As trainees, they had to undergo 12+ hours of singing, dancing, etc lessons. For foreigners like Lisa, they had to learn Korean language & customs too. I think Lisa left home/TH at 14? (If I was her parent, it would be very hard to let my child go abroad to pursue her dream of being a pop star at that age).

Lisa was the 1st member of Blackpink that I knew, because the younger ppl at my ofc liked her & BP. She was also easily recognizable because of her bangs/ fringe. Lisa is very popular in PH (and in SE Asia). Blackpink's concert in PH last year was sold out. I know someone who attended their concert here - the venue was fully booked.

TAT plans “Rockstar” walking tours of Bangkok’s Chinatown

Riding the wave of popularity following the release of Thai K-pop sensation Lisa’s blockbuster “Rockstar” music video, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is planning a new walking tour to promote Bangkok’s Chinatown, which will encompass Yaowarat, Songwat and Talad Noi.

Meanwhile, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration is to add more Chinese atmosphere to Chinatown, with a plan to replace the footpath paving with new tiles, featuring the “Bo Tan” flower design and a “Yaowarat must go on” statement

The recently-released 3-minute “Rockstar” music video has caused a storm in Bangkok, prompting many of Lisa’s female fans to visit Yaowarat Road at night, particularly to the spot on which their pop idol performed in the video.

Pheu Thai party leader Paetongtarn Shinawatra, vice chair of the government’s “soft power” committee, praised the music video as superb and as a model of “soft power”, adding that Yaowarat has become a household name and the government will take advantage of the video’s popularity to promote other aspects of Yaowarat, such as the famous street food.

Government spokesman Chai Wacharonke responded to criticism, that the government is taking advantage of Lisa’s international prowess, by asking “What is wrong with riding the wave of Lisa’s success? She is a Thai woman of whom we are proud.”
