Thailand’s broadcast and telecom regulator, the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC), has ordered Advance Info Service (AIS) to explain, on Monday, the mobile phone service disruption on Friday evening.

Sarana Boonbaichaiyapruck, NBTC chairman, said today that AIS, one of the two major mobile phone service providers in Thailand, must explain the reason for the service disruption and compensate subscribers for not being able to use their phone and internet services yesterday.

He said he was also affected by the disruption, as he warned that punitive action might be taken against AIS if it fails to provide a clear and reasonable explanation for the incident.

AIS, meanwhile, has issued a statement offering an apology to the public for the disruption and promising to recompense all affected subscribers. The company will send an SMS to all its customers, subscribed to the unlimited and other packages, by Monday, detailing the compensation that they will receive, according to the statement.
