Thailand's prime minister wants to outlaw cannabis

It will be interesting to see if this happens; I don't think they've even discussed a draft bill yet.

I'm not sure if the Health Ministry can just suddenly decide it's illegal again.

BANGKOK (AP) — The prime minister of Thailand, the first country in Asia to legalize cannabis two years ago, said Wednesday that he wants to outlaw the drug again amid concerns that the lack of regulation had made it available to children and increased crimes.
Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin wrote on the social media platform X that he asked the Health Ministry to amend its list of narcotics to again include cannabis, and issue new rules to allow its use for medical purposes only.
Srettha also ordered local authorities to suppress criminal activities linked to the illegal drug trade and demanded to see progress within 90 days.
After cannabis was decriminalized in 2022, it was initially said that it would be allowed only for medicinal use, but in practice the market was unregulated. It has prompted public backlash and concerns over misuse and crime.
Decriminalization was spearheaded by the Bhumjaithai Party, whose stronghold is in the impoverished northeast where it promised farmers cannabis would be a new cash crop.
In the 2023 elections, all major parties — including Bhumjaithai — promised to restrict cannabis for medical use.
Cannabis advocates and entrepreneurs have opposed a radical rollback, which they claimed would be damaging to the economy. Legal cannabis has fueled Thailand’s tourism and farming sectors and spawned thousands of cannabis retails ranging from shops, trucks to market stalls all over the country.

Well, it’s a sleazy, prostitute ridden, corrupted, amoral society after all, so why not add dope peddling to the mix.

Talked to a shop owner here and she said if and when this goes into effect, no worries. She has a deal with a nearby clinic who will quickly write a prescription for medical ganja use. TiT!

As far as I can tell, the Parliament in Thailand doesn't actually do much. They occasionally pass very vaguely worded laws that are then interpreted by the various Ministries and Agencies as they wish. The Ministry or Agency can change their interpretation to suit the wishes of the current government without the need to actually change the law, so something as important as criminalizing or decriminalizing the sale of marijuana can be done without any involvement of parliament!

Er, the country has never had a functioning democracy in any true sense and therefore its putative governments are usually a fig leaf of pretence concealing the machinations of cronies, shills and vested interests exercising a medieval power over a population of serfs under the overarching authority of the military.

Pita and the Move Forward party won a landslide victory in the last election but was prevented from forming a government by a military ordained quasi judicial coup.

There are now thousands of dope shops throughout the country and Thailand in addition to its service industry of prostitution has now become the deadbeat mecca for drug sleaze too.

And the deluded halfwits in their ivory towers of privilege and wealth, immunised from reality in their chauffeur driven isolation, actually believe this medieval sinkhole is a destination for the global elites.

No, that won’t work and is simply more wishful thinking from a people renown for their silliness.

Medicinal cannabis in most civilised countries is limited on prescription by hospital doctors for the benefit of those suffering from rare forms of epilepsy, adverse symptoms of chemotherapy and those multiple sclerosis sufferers subject to muscle spasms etc.

Medicinal cannabis as a therapeutic adjunct to the health industry in Thailand was used as a Trojan horse to make money and its use is now endemic with tourists smoking it wherever and whenever they wish.
Prohibition is now the only option.

    The Bigger picture

You can overthrow the elected government with impunity
You can mow down a cop in your sports star if rich enough
    It's survival of the richest
Even VIP jail, like the VIP bus where I mingle with Swift Taylor Brad Pitt and SA only plusher more like the pointy end.
Seeing uniformed officicials grovel to the returned convict tells you money is supreme.
