British Publisher Killed in Chonburi Car Accident

Colin Hastings, the owner and publisher of the Big Chilli magazine, was tragically killed after his car crashed into a house wall near Pattaya on Monday, April 29th, 2024.

The fatal car accident was reported to the Sattahip Police Station at 2:30 PM. It prompted an immediate response from the Sawang Rojjana Dham Foundation and medical workers from Yan Nasang Wararam Hospital.

The responders rushed to the scene on Soi Captain Muek in the Bang Saray sub-district of Chonburi province to find Colin’s damaged black Toyota Vios sedan that had crashed into a house wall. Colin, a British man, was discovered unconscious and severely injured inside the vehicle with significant front-end damage.

The rescue workers extracted Colin from the wreckage, while the medics spent more than half an hour performing CPR on him. However, they were unable to resuscitate him.

Relevant police are investigating the cause of the accident, but they initially suspected that the British publisher might have been speeding before losing control of the vehicle. Authorities are also exploring if Colin’s reported pre-existing medical condition played a role in his tragic death.

Colin Hastings is the publisher and owner of a Thailand-based magazine named The Big Chilli and a member of the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Thailand (FCCT). He also once served for the Bangkok Post and Thailand Tatler.

His passion project, The Big Chilli magazine, launched in November 1999, covers a wide range of topics from news to reviews, profiles, and sports, with the magazine quickly becoming a staple in major Thai locations like Pattaya, Hua Hin, Rayong, Chiang Mai, Koh Samui, and Phuket.

TPN Media extends its sincerest condolences to the friends and family of Mr. Hastings.

Either he wasnt wearing a seatbelt and/or it was an old model vios.

NERD ALERT .... from the grille and headlight shape, it looks like the xp90 version, produced from 2007 to 2013

entry level vehicles (e.g. toyota vios,)produced for s.e.asian markets were made to a (low) price and not equipped with many of the safety features ( multiple air bags, seat belt pretensioners, good quality steel, design of crumple zones etc.) included in more more upmarket models or vehicles destined for export to more demanding and safety conscious markets. (europe, japan)

The Big Chilli magazine was always one of the better magazines marketed for the farang population of Thailand.

Never heard of him and never seen the big Chilli anywhere. Our 2012 Vios has air bags, lot of plastic construction though at the front and rear

Happily my little world does not include tourist places or foreigner hang outs like crappy bars with tarts in them, where this Chilli rag is probably to be found. What's so great about it? Never saw it in a hotel, never in any Thai places or in a shop. I tend to avoid anything to do with foreigners here anyway, mostly a group cheats, loud mouths and know it alls.

    Who said it was great?

tax said it was 'one of the better magazines' (funded by advertising).

That's a long way from 'great'.

It’s all relative. Compared to most, if not all, Thai published material the Big Chilli probably was great.

What a silly rant. Colin was a well respected publisher here. You come off as bitter and angry. You have no clue at all about the man or his publications over his time here.

Great because in your opinion most, if not all, of the other stuff is terrible?

No, that's just not how it works.

From what I understand, safety standards are relaxed in Thailand versus what the USA requires. I know this is true for the Mazda 2 we had in Thailand, and then later in the USA.

the article suggests that he may have lost consciousness whilst driving thus causing the accident.

Examination found that the deceased was an FCCT official and the father of a "former half-breed actress".
the former half breed actress is Angie Hastings. whether that is "former half breed actress" or "half breed former actress" is not made clear.

While I didn't want to quote to have the pic show up again but just how in the hell did that guy hit that wall? Did he flat do a 90 into it? The picture looks really odd in Post 9. Its a small soi so how could he have been going that fast to create that much damage.

I have to say, I have never heard of the "Big Chilli" publication. However being honest, I do not follow anything over here on news or whatever. Most are utter crap content and poor journalism as are all the asshats doing YT vlogs.

Being I work in the automotive segment, there isn't a "DOT" requirment here in Thailand or SEAsia. In the US auto safety is very strictly enforced and validated especially with crumple zones and high risk impact areas. I can tell you my Hilux lacks a tremendous amount of safety features the counterpart Tacoma has in the US. I owned both. Very different in that regard.

Is it a junction and he was trying to turn left?

If so that makes the speed he must have been doing even more ridiculous.
