Toyota to Test Fully Electric Songthaews in Pattaya

Pattaya City received 12 fully electric Songthaews, also called Baht Buses, a popular mode of public transport in Thailand, from Toyota in a move to transform the city into an emission-free city.

Pattaya City Mayor Mr. Poramase Ngampiches presided over a ceremony to receive 12 electric Hilux Revo-e pickup trucks from the Japanese automaker on Thursday, April 25th. The vehicles were handed over by Mr. Surabhumi Udomwong, Deputy Managing Director of Toyota Motor Thailand Co, and Mr. Rewat Sienchin, Chairman of the Pattaya Transport Cooperative.

The ceremony took place at the Pattaya City Hall and was followed by a parade of the electric Songthaews to celebrate the handover at the Bali Hai Pier.

Pattaya City and Toyota Motor Thailand collaborated in the “Sustainable Zero-Emission City Prototype Project” in a mission to improve transportation and public transport systems in Pattaya using clean energy vehicles. This initiative aligns with the city’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality.

The 12 electric trucks will be used for a public Songthaew trial from April 2024 to December 2025. They will operate between Bali Hai Pier-South Pattaya to the Banglamung District Office, with five vehicles serving the route. Fares will be in accordance with the Pattaya Transport Cooperative.

According to the city’s announcement, this marks one of the first times in Thailand that electric vehicles have been introduced for public transportation in the form of Songthaews. A limited test took place in Chiang Mai previously. The project aims to pave the way for a fully sustainable public transportation system in Pattaya.
