Srettha to discuss holding Formula 1 race on Bangkok's roads

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin will have a talk with Formula One Group over an attempt to organise F1 racing on Bangkok’s roads.

According to local reports, Srettha will meet with Stefano Domenicali, chief executive of the Formula One Group, at Government House on Monday to discuss the possibility of hosting F1 racing in the Thai capital.

Speaking to the newspaper Thansettakij, government spokesman Chai Watcharong said Formula One Group has expressed interest in bringing the F1 racing event to Thailand, adding that the race would either be on a racetrack or public roads.

“Basically, if F1 is going to be held in Thailand, we want it to be held on the roads – if possible, on Ratchadamnoen around Rattanakosin Island. We are currently working on the matter,” he said.

Chai also said that the beauty of Rattanakosin Island would be presented globally while the event is held, and this is in line with Srettha’s “Ignite Thailand Tourism” vision.

It is hoped that the racing competition would take place at the end of this year, he added.

Earlier, the ruling Pheu Thai Party posted on X that Srettha had an online meeting with Domenicali during his trip to France and that Formula One’s organiser views Thailand as a good place to hold the competition.

The PM is confident that if the event is held, there will be a large number of tourists coming to Thailand, the party said.

    “ on the roads “.
There’s hardly more than half a mile of continuously level surfaced pavement in the entire country but I’m sure they’ll find a way to get round the obstacles.

It's amazing what you can accomplish if you throw money and labour at something.

They should keep the motorbikes and food carts for added spice.

Wouldn't surprise me if they allowed food sellers to walk between the cars on the starting grid.

He's certainly on a roll is out property magnate. He's "wooing" investors to build the worlds tallest building too. If I didn't know better I'd think he's papering over the cracks of his paper tiger.

The PM seems to think that the F1 circus will pay him, so that F1 can race in Bangkok. It doesn’t work like that, but the PM clearly thinks it does!

Currently, the region is well represented by a proper GP held in Singapore which is contracted to operate until 2029, as I understand it.

A complication I would think but then these Thai never seem to factor into their fantasies any notion of reality.

Bahrain and Saudi both have GPs.

It's a ridiculous proposal for Bangkok of course, but not because Singapore has a GP.

Asia has a huge market potential for F1 so why not add Thailand to only Japan, China and Singapore? Keep in mind however Malaysia had one for awhile but poor ticket sales caused it to opt out.

It suits F1 to have multiple GPs in one region; it's cheaper to move everything around short distances.

Of course they'll still want a shitload of cash up front from Srettha before committing to anything. And he will have to understand that they have complete control over track and paddock for the duration of the event.

There will be no Pol. Col. pitching up unannounced and being allowed into VIP areas without the appropriate pass.

It will be around the old town forsure, plenty of space, roads are already pretty good around there and will look epic at night. Why so much negativity.....meh
