Swiss Expat Critically Injured in Scooter-Car Crash in Pattaya

A Swiss expat in Pattaya is critically injured after being hit by a car while riding his three-wheeled electric scooter to buy medicine. His wife is seeking justice for her husband, claiming the other party refused to take responsibility.

According to the Thai wife, Mrs. Samrit Geisbuehler, the accident occurred on April 19th at around 9:50 AM as her husband, 73-year-old Mr. Andeks Geisbuehler, was on his way to purchase his regular medication. The incident was captured on CCTV footage, showing the car, an Isuzu Mu-X, colliding with Mr. Andeks’s scooter as he crossed an intersection on a road along a railway in the Khao Talo area, South Pattaya.

Mr. Andeks was rushed to the hospital with severe injuries and has been placed in the ICU. Mrs. Samrit revealed that she was disappointed with the alleged lack of support from the driver, who she claimed has not offered any words of consolation or financial assistance to her Swiss husband. The medical expenses have already reached over 200,000 baht, but the driver, whose name has been withheld in light of an ongoing investigation, allegedly tried to hand over the entire responsibility to the insurance company.

Furthermore, Mrs. Samrit is concerned about the lack of progress in the investigation. The Nongprue police, who are responsible for the case, have yet to determine who is at fault or arrange a meeting between the parties involved.

Fearing that the case will be overlooked, Mrs. Samrit is appealing to the media for help in seeking justice for her husband. She wanted to make sure that the driver is held accountable for their actions, and justice is served for her husband.

I considered an electric bike, until I realized solar fuel, silent, good for environmernt would be offset by lack of safety and less manouverable than my mororcycle you can lean, brake or accelerate. Also little us on mud tracks in the rubber plantations.

If I lived in a city with bike lanes maybe.

However be careful as a pedestrian as UK and US is full of senior whizzing around, with no licence tag so hit and run, like Hell's grannies!

Tough luck for the old fellow, in many ways health and safety may seem crazy in the developed world, but here pretty much like my childhood it's up to you.

If the Swiss guy hasn't got a Thai motorcycle license then he shouldn't have been on the road. And did he have insurance cover?

It seems the crossing is light controlled so inevitably one must ask, was it red for either party when they negotiated it?

The thing is, a very serious injury arose out of this incident which in any civilised country would have resulted in an immediate police investigation given the possibility it was a possible crime scene.

But then, it is a third world medieval shithole of a country and no one important was injured, seemingly.

How fast do those e-trikes manage?
Situation awareness is critical, especially in Thailand, bike or trike, or car, you've got to look and check for approaching traffic at junctions. Naïve to believe it is your right of way.

The bigger vehicle always wins, so it ends up being their right of way.

Those mobility scooter are not legal for road use, so there will be no insurance.

The traffic lights on the bypass road have not been in use for many many years.

The road was changed to dual carriageway back in 2012 or so, thats when the traffic lights were installed..... they caused utter bedlam so shortly there after were turned off and not used since.

    This is the intersection.

Is it an intersection which has no markings or signage so people just sail through it from all directions?

Not that signage helps. Some intersections have stop signs but people run them.

Well, given there are no functioning pavements of any consequence anywhere in Pattaya of any length that are not obstructed by holes, broken surfaces, poles, motorsai scum, and steps, I would say those scooters are somewhat redundant in this medieval tropical shithole.

    Ah, Oh well.

Back in the day Beach Road on a busy day was very much an opportunity to test your mettle in playing chicken with the several lanes of traffic obstructing pedestrians attempting to traverse it as they crossed to and fro the promenade, there being no pedestrian crossings to speak of.

And then under the governance of the then mayor Ittiplume Kunpleume ( now elsewhere evading scrutiny for possible corruption charges ) installed a series of light controlled pedestrian crossings every few hundred meters for the length of the Road from the Dusit Corner to Walking Street at a cost apparently of £60,000 per set of lights that also sported a walking man in green, a countdown and bleeps. A great aid to the travelling public on foot who could cross in safety provided they understood the rules that motorcyclists and songthaews were exempted from the control lights and could sail on regardless.

The problem was that they caused congestion and people got fed up with the traffic jams and so the local council deactivated a few but retained the ones nearest to significant foot fall i.e Central Festival.

But it seems even these have gone now and I think from my recent perambulations there is now only one in operation the length of Beach Road and we are all reduced again to playing chicken and scurrying like rats.

As a fine metaphor for Thailand’s medieval incompetence Pattaya is probably as good as any.

The unlucky pensioner nearly got past the vehicle. I'm guessing the driver saw him but badly overestimated the pensioner's speed.

    Interesting, got a link.

    No licence needed.
And legal to ride on the road.
Would be perfect for bar hopping !

Apparently the lights fell out of use sometime ago.
