Consumers advised to be cautious when eating paper-wrapped fried chicken

The Department of Science Services has advised consumers that paper-wrapped fried chicken may be contaminated with carcinogenic substances from the wrapping paper.

Responding to a report on social media, Dr. Kanit Tapasa, spokesman for the department, explained that there are currently two types of pulp used in the production of paper, pure natural pulp and recycled pulp.

In the production process of pure paper pulp, he said that chemicals, such as sodium hydroxide and chlorine, are used to produce white pulp, adding that most of these chemicals are eliminated during the washing process, but heavy metals may remain in the pulp, left by water or engine oil used in the production process.

Pulp which comes from recycled paper has gone through a process to separate foreign matter from the paper and the de-inking process may leave residues of toxic substances.

When chicken, which is wrapped in the paper, has been fried in boiling oil, the heat from the oil may cause heavy metal residues in the paper, such as lead, cadmium or mercury, to be released into the chicken, even though the paper may be heat resistant and will only catch fire in heat of about 222oC, while the temperature of boiling oil is about 190oC, said Dr. Kanit.

He advised consumers to ask the fried chicken vendor whether the paper they use to wrap the chicken is cooking paper or paper suitable for contact with hot food.

fried chicken aficionados are more likely to die from obesity, heart attacks, strokes and diabetes than from the effects of heavy metals in the paper wraps or the poisonous chemicals that are released whenever cheap chinese polystyrene takeway food cartons are used, i.e. in thailand, always.

it is illegal in the uk, and i suspect in most of the west to use newspaper or polystyrene to contain heated food or liquids.

Oh, and in my experience the fish and chips were never placed directly in newspaper. It was used as an outer wrapping only.

Cy's spot on, not seen in newspaper this century anywhere, poly boxes came and went, now often a card box tho I always eat in,not sure where that paper is from a v old or mock up stock photo.Of course we know in Anglia they may be behind 'THE TIMES' tho North Sea Coast had great fish and spuds in Lincs I'll leave dogger bank to the sexperts.

I only eat once a year after sailing in Lyme Bay at a fantastic cafe aptly named FRYDAYS in Seaton, DORSET, UK where Hake,Haddock and peas. enough chips to sink a attle ship is around 17 oounds in their restaurant, they do a small cod and chips kids oap deal for 9,99 around 450 baht mid week with a pot of tea and i think bread and butter

Recommend to Mendy who passes that way, next a walk around the cliff for a beer in a lovely cliff top garden by the PECO rail worl in aplty named hamlet of BEER, lovely Anchor Inn has large beer garden above slipway to tacht club.

Lucky I didn't retire or would eat a differentfish/seafoof supper daily and ressemble beer barrel even more

    Highly recommend

why on earth do you think that?

the relevant 2004 regulations for food wrapping were sensible and well thought out (Document 02004R1935-20210327 Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 October 2004 on materials and articles intended to come into contact with food and repealing Directives 80/590/EEC and 89/109/EEC)

the eu, of which the uk was a member at the time and helped to formulate the regulations, was responsible for many worthy improvements in our lives, and these days the uk still implements regulations, often formulated by the eu, which continue to improve the uks environment and well being.

the difference cyrille, as you are well aware, is now we can pick and choose instead of being forced to implement directives that the uk thinks are unnecessary or unduly burdensome.

As long as you don't do much of anything, you will be ok.
