    25 killed, 248 injured in road accidents on first day of Songkran travel

    Twenty-five people were killed and 248 others injured in 234 road accidents across the country on Thursday, Chaiwat Chuntirapong, director-general of the Department of Public Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, told a press conference today.


    44.02% of the accidents were caused by speeding, 20.94% by cutting in and 16.67% by drunk driving. 86% of the accidents involved motorcycles and 85.90% took place on straight roads, 47.01% on main roads and


    23.50% on secondary roads. Most of the accidents took place between 4pm and 5pm.
    Songkhla province saw most accidents, recording 11 involving 13 injuries. Bangkok had the most fatalities, with three.


    Chaiwat said that, since tomorrow is when more people are expected engage in water splashing and in other festive activities, officials have been instructed to increase patrols on secondary roads in communities and to warn motorists and motorcyclists against speeding or drunk driving and to wear crash helmets in the case of those on motorcycles.


    Deputy Interior Permanent Secretary Chotnarin Kerdsom, meanwhile, said that stores selling alcohol are warned not to sell to people who are under 20 and to observe liquor sales hours strictly.

    Casualties from road accidents in the first two days of the long Songkran holiday have risen to 63 dead and 550 injured in 541 accidents, according to the Command Centre for the Prevention and Reduction of Road Accidents during the Songkran Festival.


    307 road accidents were recorded on Friday, resulting in 38 fatalities and 299 people injured. 41.37% of the accidents were caused by speeding, 21.17% by drunk driving and 20.20% by cutting in. 84.91% of the accidents involved motorcycles.


    Most of the accidents occurred between 4pm and 5pm and between 7pm and 8pm. Phayao province recorded the highest number of road accidents yesterday, at 15. Three people died each in Nakhon Ratchasima, Roi-et and Chiang Rai.


    For the past two days, Chiang Rai and Prachuap Khiri Khan recorded the highest number of road accidents, at 21 each. Roi-et had the highest death toll at five, while Nakhon Si Thammarat and Songkhla have the highest number of injured, at 22 each.

    162 people killed, 1,279 injured in road accidents in past four days

    Another 38 people were killed and 311 others were injured in 317 road accidents on Sunday, bringing total death toll for four days since April 11th to 162. Altogether 1,279 people were injured.


    Bangkok and Roi-et recorded the most fatalities, at 10 each, while Nakhon Si Thammarat has the most road accidents and injuries, at 50 and 54 respectively.


    Speeding accounted for 37.22% of road accidents yesterday, drunk driving, 25.87% and poor visibility, 15.46%. Motorcycles were involved in 87.51% of the road accidents.


    Meanwhile, 2,136 traffic violators were put on probation by the courts yesterday, most of them found guilty of drunk driving.


    In the past four days, 3,890 people have been put on probation, about 96% of them were found guilty of drunk driving. Bangkok has the most cases of drunk driving, at 399, followed by 227 cases in Nonthaburi and 214 cases in Samut Prakan.
