Government Clarifies Songkran Celebration Confusion for Chinese Tourist

The government has offered an explanation about a Chinese tourist who was under the impression that Bangkok would be hosting continuous water fights during the Songkran festival, based on the government's 21-day celebration announcement.

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin clarified that the extended celebration does not imply non-stop water festivities throughout. The concept encompasses a variety of traditional activities across different regions, with water-playing events scheduled for specific dates after April 13 in certain areas like Phra Pradaeng and Pattaya.

To further promote the Maha Songkran World Water Festival and celebrate Songkran on an international scale, the Public Relations Department (PRD) is actively publicizing the event.

PRD Director-General Sudruetai Lertkasem and Deputy Director-General Janya Amhirun have been visiting Ratchaburi and Phetchaburi provinces to oversee preparations and instill a sense of pride and awareness of Songkran.

This year's Songkran celebration welcomed the global recognition of the festival as an "Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity" by UNESCO. The government's goal is to showcase Songkran as a worldwide celebration, highlighting a diverse array of activities to not only attract tourists but also to foster a sense of national pride among Thais in their cultural heritage.

It was always so simple until the government intervened: Get wet on the inside, then get wet on the outside, or just stay at home.

It's astonishing that this utterly banal shite has been fucked up so badly as to need addressing by the Prime Minister.

Seeking botty seems to get quite worked up over Thais and how they chose to run their country. To me its an endless comedy sketch, from the moment you turn on the news in the morning where item after item of Thais finding ever more novel ways to off themselves to showing the viewer just how intrusive health and safety legislation in the west has become. If you chose you can then leave your accommodation and experience this together with the whole spectrum of Thainess live. To sum up, it's difficult to feel miserable in Thailand with so much comedy on offer.

The government caused the problem by making it a 3 week holiday for Thai in the first place. No wonder tourist are confused.

Now the same government has had to back track and explain all the nonsense to save the tourist income.

Will the water war be going on Monday? Or is it a wait and see situation?

Water wars on Monday in CM?

No but, as others have mentioned, any random dickhead has a licence to spill for the next two weeks.

All good fun on the way home from Udon Thani today. Pickups and roadside water splashes but nothing OTT and good to get a cooling down. Not that SUVs are a target, just wastes ammo.
I've been offered a ride on the back of a honda wave tomorrow so I get the full treatment. Then it's village party time.

    National leak week

Couldn't organise a cadmium dump let alone count the days on a cakendar

    The national damp cull continues

Better living here with water guns than Burma USA with randon real ones

The kids have a ball, the poor get a few days off to visit the village and foreign posers can look on join in or wallow in the sunset happy ending as they come into a bucket of Sangsom with three canine/feline/snortline friends the last legal spliff and TD sodcast in the jacuzzi

    May joy be unrestrained

Most factories ceased production on or about the 10th - 11th and are resuming work on or about 17th-18th. The actual bank holiday period began 12th and extends to 16 th when government offices etc will reopen.
The actual Songkran celebration of course varies according to chanwat but Bkk began yesterday and ends Monday, Chiang Mai who fucking cares, and in the Chonburi district it moves from Sriracha etc on 11 th to Pattaya Beach Road on Friday 19 th culminating in the final Wan Lai on the 20 th at Bangsaray.
This is what usually happens every fucking year.
But this year the usual government halfwits and money grubbing buffoons deliriously pronounced to one and all that the whole of April would be a holiday without of course thinking of the consequences or the idiocy of that pronouncement.

    Stupidest folk on the planet.

Look at the wording in the OP.

A '21 day celebration', not a three week holiday.

I recall in Feb/ March the TAT and one of Shetties lackeys pronouncing the whole of April would a Songkran celebration.

Typical hyperbole from Somchai but no one could blame foreigners for not realising Thai are fucking idiots who love to run their gobs off.

If it was all very clear, the PM would not have to go to the trouble of clarifying it. Thais will ekeout any advantage they can. The period, including weekends lasts for around 3 weeks.

If you insist on splitting hairs in an attempt to prove me wrong, you’re wasting your time and energy. Well done.

I can never tell when Cyrille is telling the truth anyway. Enjoy your ‘celebrations’.

According to the OP. Songkran is a 21 day celebration.

People who tell lies can interpret that anyway they like. I have a good idea how the Thai will interpret it. Your interpretation does not matter, because you are an Alien and a liar.

This confusion highlights the government's inability to properly execute its policies, which can be seen in other programmes, such as its flagship digital wallet cash handout.
