Pattaya: Brit dies in glass door accident

    Thairath news
    Wednesday 3 April 2024 11.43am

British businessman Gareth John Wilson, 54, returned to his house in Huay Yai, Banglamung, from drinking with a friend.

Apparently slipped and fell on the bathroom sliding door, shattering the glass of the door which pierced his chest leaving a large open wound.

He was found face down on the broken glass on the floor by his wife early this morning, still conscious. Bangkok Pattaya Hospital doctors attended the scene however he died due to the large blood loss.

    ^ that glass shattering

Either #1 those houses are old, or #2 cost-cutting not using tempered/safety glass?

Or #3 no such requirements under the Thai Building Code

#4 is there an enforced Thai Building Code?

Walking and falling into the sliding door The mirror was cut into the chest and the gaping hole was horrifying. There was a large, serious wound on his chest. until the chest skin opens You could see the ribcage, internal organs, and blood gushing out. Died gruesomely near the body near the bathroom sliding door.
an excellent example of clickbait gore. chickenheads up and down the country will be smirking into their morning lao kao as they revel in the details of another foreigners demise.

The police questioned the deceased's wife. Initially, it was stated that last night The deceased had gone drinking with friends. and returned to the house in the middle of the night. When I woke up in the morning, my husband was walking to the bathroom. It appeared that he had felt dizzy. He fell face first onto the glass of the sliding door until the whole thing shattered and was stabbed in the middle of his chest by a shard of glass. At that time the deceased was still conscious. Trying to support myself, I lay down on the bed. The relatives then called a doctor from Bangkok Pattaya Hospital to come help, but the wound from the glass insert was large. and had a lot of blood loss Therefore causing death later.
from that rather garbled translation of the thai rath report it would seem the wife did very little to help him.

Only on government and commercial buildings and seldom enforced.

...how is it he shattered the bathroom door and the wife didn't wake? Did she also sleep through the calls for help?...

He possibly fractured the glass door in a drunken mishap but she may well have administered the coup de grace.

She was awake. But too traumatised to do anything.

One of the houses my Welsh mate lived in, in Korat had a sliding glass door right at the foot of the stairs to the second storey. I think the intention must have been to stop warm air going upstairs, where there was aircon.

This was at a time when the kids were only around 4 or 5, so absolutely lethal if one slipped down the stairs... and not just for kids, any age to be honest.

I don't know of my work maybe makes me more observant to potential dangers, but anyway I told him it was an accident waiting to happen.

He got the landlord to remove the glass door.

Since she was untrained, I doubt waving a jar of tiger balm under his nose would have helped anyway.
