Arrest warrant issued for Pol Gen Surachate on money laundering charges

The Ratchadapisek Criminal Court issued a warrant this afternoon for the arrest of Pol Gen Surachate Hakparn, the deputy national police chief, on the grounds that there is sufficient evidence that he was involved in money laundering in connection with an online gambling platform and attempted to dodge summonses issued by police investigators.

The Thung Song Hong enquiry officers in charge of the money laundering case had issued three successive summonses for Surachate to report to acknowledge the charges against him on April 1st, but they were all ignored in what is believed to have been a delaying tactic, forcing the officers to seek a warrant from the court.

The court considered the request at about 4pm today and decided to issue the arrest warrant.

It was reported that Surachate had cancelled all his appointments, turned off his cell phone and booked a flight to a southern province this evening, after he learned of the issuance of the arrest warrant.

Arrest warrants were earlier issued for three other police officers close to Surachate and a civilian for alleged involvement in money laundering linked to the BNK Master gambling platform.

Addressing the charges against his client, Surachate’s lawyer, Natthakorn Tosakul, filed a defamation lawsuit with the Bangkok South Criminal Court on March 13th, against Pol Maj-Gen Charoonkiat Pankaew, deputy commissioner of the Central Investigation Bureau, accusing him of leaking information of the police investigation to the media, causing damage to Surachate.

God, what a grubby little medieval cesspit this country truly is. What is particularly nauseating is the fact this man was transferred from his post over five years ago for involvement is an extortion racket targeting Chink tourists at the airports. Can’t quite remember if any administrative action was taken then before his ‘ rehabilitation ‘.

Surachate surrenders, freed on bail after questioning

Deputy national police chief, Pol Gen Surachate Hakparn, reported to the enquiry officer at Taopoon police station on Tuesday afternoon, to acknowledge the money laundering charges filed against him. He was granted bail after about four hours of questioning.

Pol Gen Surachate told reporters as he left the police station at about 8pm that he has denied all the charges and vows to fight the case in the court.

He insisted that he is still regarded as innocent until he is found guilty by the court.

The embattled senior police officer decided to surrender after the Criminal Court issued a warrant for his arrest yesterday, as he had ignored three summonses issued by the Taopoon police.

Gen Surachate said that he is not worried that the charges against him may undermine his candidacy for national police chief, when Pol Gen Torsak Sukvimol retires at the end of September.

Responding to a reporter’s question about a speculation that he may be temporarily relieved from his duty by the prime minister, because of the serious charges against him, Surachate said that it is not only him who is now facing criminal charges, Pol Gen Torsak is also facing criminal charges.

Both Surachate and Torsak have been transferred to the Prime Minister’s Office, pending the outcomes of criminal cases against them, allegedly in connection with an online gambling platform.

How do you get "relieved from duty" from an "inactive post" then?

Deputy national police chief involved in money laundering : probe team

An ad hoc fact-finding committee has found sufficient evidence for it to believe that Pol Gen Surachate Hakparn, the deputy national police chief, was allegedly involved in money laundering connected to an online gambling platform and benefited from the illegal activities, according to Pol Gen Winai Thongsong, a member of the committee.

He said yesterday that the committee had planned to give a press conference about the outcome of the probe even before the Criminal Court decided on Tuesday to issue a warrant for the arrest of Surachate.

The committee’s findings regarding Surachate will be submitted to Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin for consideration, while another related investigation concerning the national police chief, Pol Gen Torsak Sukvimol, is still under way.

The committee, led by Chatchai Promlert, a retired interior ministry permanent secretary, had questioned 10 witnesses, who made allegations against Torsak and Surachate in connection with the BNK Master online gambling platform.

Regarding the allegations against Torsak, Pol Gen Winai said that the committee had invited lawyer Sittra Biabungkerd for questioning next Thursday, about how and where the lawyer had obtained the incriminating evidence against Torsak and his wife.

The lawyer filed a complaint with Taopoon police, accusing the couple of alleged involvement in money laundering related to the online gambling platform.

Both Torsak and Surachate were earlier transferred to “inactive posts” at the PM’s Office, pending the outcome of the investigation into the online gambling case.
