Thread: Hail storm strikes northeastern Thailand, sizable hailstones in decades

Several provinces in the northern region experienced a summer storm accompanied by hail, causing both alarm and excitement due to the unusually large size of the hailstones.


A summer storm with strong gusts of wind and hail occurred, wreaking havoc in three sub-districts of Bueng Kan Province. Video clips shared by locals on social media during the hail storm showed that the hailstones were large, some as big as a child’s fist or a tennis ball. Many people, posting on Facebook, mentioned that in the past 40-50 years, they had never witnessed such large hailstones before. After the hail storm subsided, people began collecting the hailstones in containers and taking pictures to share on social media, marking a rare occurrence of a hail storm in the area.

After the incident, officials visited the affected areas with officials to assess the damage. A total of 1,376 houses in 18 villages had been damaged. There have been no reports yet of injuries or fatalities among the residents, but agricultural crops will undergo further assessment.


In Udon Thani province, a Facebook user named ‘White Hero’ posted a video of hailstones falling in Nonsa-ard District.


The hailstones fell like white raindrops, creating loud thumping noises when hitting the roofs. Most of the hailstones were the size of bird eggs, but some were as big as chicken eggs, leading locals to describe the hailstorm as remarkably beautiful.

In terms of damage in Udon Thani Province, many houses and farms were significantly affected, with officials continuing their assessments.


In Mukdahan Province, the summer storm accompanied by wind and rain brought hail, resulting in damage to several areas. The severe storm caused houses and livestock sheds to lose their roofs due to the strong winds.

I have seen sizable hailstones in north-eastern Thailand. It was about 12 years ago I think.

I guess we have been lucky in our area. Yes, we've had the occasional hailstorm but nothing larger than a garden pea. Well, a very small garden pea to be precise.
