Falling debris causes suspension of Bangkok’s Yellow Line service

The elevated Yellow Line monorail service in Bangkok is suspended until midnight, to allow for repairs and a thorough inspection, following an incident in which metal debris fell from the track onto traffic below on Srinakarin Road this morning, damaging some vehicles.

Industry Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit has ordered a tightening of safety measures, to prevent another accident, according to his advisor Pongkawin Juangroongruangkit, who visited the scene of the incident today.

“If this happens again, the minister has stated that he would review the contract and those found to be responsible could face penalties,” said Pongkawin.

According to the Rail Transport Department’s inspection report, issued at about 8:30am, the conductor rail between Kalantan and Si Udom stations fell onto the walkways, causing loose metal debris to fall to the ground, resulting in the suspension of services on the entire line.

Officials had to evacuate passengers stranded in two carriages when the accident occurred. The falling debris damaged one minivan, a sedan and a motorcycle. No one was injured.

Compensation will be provided by Eastern Bangkok Monorail, the concessionaire of the line, according to Pongkawin.

On January 2, a tyre fell off a Yellow Line monorail train and hit a taxi below, on Thepharak Road in Samut Prakan province. No one was injured. On December 24 last year, another section of conductor rail fell from the Pink Line monorail onto Tiwanon Road, also causing service suspension.

Partial resumption of Yellow Line service

The Yellow Line monorail resumed a partial service today. Five stations remain closed, to allow for repairs to damage on the conductor rail caused by the dislocation of an expansion joint finger plate.

Due to the inconvenience caused to commuters by the closure of five stations, requiring commuters to change trains at Hua Mark and Si Iam stations, the Eastern Bangkok Monorail Company, the Yellow Line concessionaire, has discounted fares by 20% for the entire route between Lat Phrao and Samrong.

The volume of passengers using the service today is below normal.

Passengers who want to travel to Samrong from Lat Phrao will have to change trains at Hua Mark station, while passengers travelling from Samrong will have to change trains at Si Iam station, because only one rail is operational between Hua Mark and Si Iam stations.

Ten additional buses from the Bangkok Mass Transit Company have been deployed to carry passengers between Hua Mark and Si Iam stations.

The company said that service resumed today at 18 stations, with the exception of Kalantan, Si Nut, Srinagarind 38, Phra Ram 9 and Si Udom, which remain closed.

To prevent a recurrence of the conductor rail incident, the company says that it has asked the manufacturer of the finger plate to fix the dislocation problem or come up with a new design.

Debris from the conductor rail fell on to the road below, causing damage to a few vehicles. No one was injured. The service was suspended for the whole day yesterday.

Yellow Line must replace all bolts on finger plates for safety

The Rail Transport Department has ordered Eastern Bangkok Monorail (EBM) to replace all the bolts used to tighten finger plates along the entire length of the Yellow Line track, after it was discovered that some bolts were missing between the Rama 9 and Si Udom stations, due to joint expansion. They fell onto the walkway below.

The Yellow Line concessionaire was also ordered to speed up the recovery of a train which is blocking a track, so that the full service can resume, said Pichet Kunadhamraks, head of the Rail Transport Department, adding that the removal could take 2-3 months.

Pichet and his officials inspected the Yellow Line yesterday, as part of an investigation into the cause of debris falling from the track and to observe the repairs.

He also ordered the company to increase the frequency of inspections of expansion joints, to ensure they are working properly.

A partial service resumed on Friday, after a one-day suspension, but passengers travelling from Lat Phrao or from Samrong will have to transfer by shuttle bus to trains at Hua Mark station in one direction and at Si Iam station in the other.

The frequency of train service between Lat Phrao and Hua Mark stations is every ten minutes (five minutes during rush hours). From Si Iam station to Samrong station, it is every ten minutes.

From Hua Mark and Si Iam stations, however, only one track remains open, due to the stranded train, so a train leaves every 25 minutes.

Passengers are advised to allow additional travel time but, due to the inconvenience, passengers are being offered a 20% discount until normal service is resumed.
