Nakhon Ratchasima Eyes Air Force Base for Commercial Flights

Nakhon Ratchasima province is seeking to boost its tourism and business sectors through the reactivation of Wing 1 of the Royal Thai Air Force for commercial flight operations. The request was presented to Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin by provincial state agency representatives during a meeting on Sunday (Mar 24).

The proposal has been lodged with the aim of making travel to the province more accessible and promoting local business growth.

Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit has been directed by the Prime Minister to assess the viability of this proposal. Nakhon Ratchasima has previously utilized its Department of Airports-operated airport until the discontinuation of commercial flights in 1997. The move to reactivate the old airport at Wing 1 comes after Nok Air expressed interest in resuming operations, provided it could utilize the more centrally located facility.

Wing 1’s location within the capital district offers closer proximity to the city than the existing Nakhon Ratchasima airport, potentially enhancing the convenience for travelers and stimulating economic activity within the region. The nearest operational airport to Nakhon Ratchasima is located in Buri Ram.

But,but, what was the point of the high speed link that will connect Khorat to Bkk in a little over 90 minutes.

^ You'll need the high speed link for when Nok Air cancel half full flights with no warning, hence meaning a missed international flight out of BKK (which would also mean a transfer from DMK)... if indeed you've been daft enough to trust them in the first place.

So, you'll have to continue stopping over in bkk for a night or two.

    Pity.

    ^ Them's the breaks, I guess.

Actually, I think that the high speed rail link could well be the making of Korat... well, the south-west bound line anyway for quick getaways. I don't really see the point of the north-east bound line.

There have been commercial flights between Bangkok and Korat a few times in the past. By the time you get transportation to the airport, check in, hang about in the lounge, boarding, fly and then go through that in reverse order at the other end, you could have driven faster. They are just a bit too close together.

And with that motorway 6 coming into use it's just plain stupid. A bus from Korat to BKK only takes 4 hours.

^ Depends how fast you want to get out of Dodge?

Sorry mate, but my comment was purely related to my usual desire for a quick exit out of Korat, compared to the feeling of depression I get on returning. I'm quite happy for a slow journey back up the hill as it gives me time to prepare and reminisce on some good times in between visits to Trendy.

But of course, if you're in a hurry to return to the baking hot, desolate, litter-strewn Nong Bua Nakhon Nowhere Thale, then my comment was entirely inappropriate.

    Please accept my apologies.

I get depression if I go within 50 KM of the place. I feel sorry for you. I don't live upmarket but Makro is a no no for me unless I'm desperate.

Makro and Big C shoppers are so depressing. They are probably the same demographic who patronise Tesco in UK: greasy hair, stained tracksuit bottomed, tattooed, fat with nicotine coloured skin and flabby jowls who can only walk in straight lines ……. and that’s just the women.

^ I think that's an unfair generalisation... I shop a lot at Makro.

Not too much wrong with macro, their selection of salted peanuts, fresh fruits, dried fruits, spices and cleaning products is comprehensive, the stores are rarely crowded.

the problem with macro is that the smaller restaurant and cafe owners increasingly use it to source nearly all their flavourings and ingredients, resulting in a lack of individuality and experimentation in recipes and food that tastes the same wherever you eat, much like the fast food outlets.

when we notice macro branded stuff in the kitchens we tend to move on.

To be honest korat has never turned me on, I've passed by it and stayed a night or 2 but mostly because I'm on a roadie to koh Chang or somewhere else. The mall is great but that's all I've found to amuse myself. Is there a bar area? Much prefer udon thani or Khon kean which is becoming quite the bustling metropolis.

^ I would have to say thst Makro is one of the high points of Korat, although the bar is set low.

It has become my go to place for lots of Western stuff, including Talley's peas. So long as we have Makro and Korat Chef I don't think we need any other shops.

Surprised to hear the airport/flight situation is such a mess in Korat with it's reletively high population as compared to other Isan provinces. I have been flying from Roi Et to Bangkok on Air Asia for 20 years and never once had a flight cancelled.

Makro and Tops here are great and more than adequate to meet my needs. In no way is Makro and it's customers low so scum as some here who don't know shit have stated.
