Dating app billboard causes a stir in Korat

A billboard promoting a dating app, recently erected in Muang district of Nakhon Ratchasima, known locally as Korat, has drawn mixed reactions from Thai netizens.

On the billboard, this question was asked: ‘What is delicious in Korat?’ There were two choices: ‘Fried Korat Noodles’ or ‘Korat ladies’. There was a checkmark next to ‘Korat Ladies’ and a cross next to ‘Fried Korat Noodles’.

The presence of the billboard came to light after Korat Daily Facebook posted its photo. It is reported that some people who saw the billboard are not happy, claiming that the advertisement looks down on Korat women.

Nonetheless, many of those who comment on the Korat Daily Facebook page expressed their interest in trying the dating app to find love. In responding to negative comments, some wrote advising people to “please relax and enjoy your life; it is an ad from Tinder, which is a dating app.”

Some persons suggested that the billboard should be taken down, asking which authorities granted permission for its erection.

Of course, the two are not mutually exclusive. You don't have to choose only one. You can enjoy both.

Dating app billboard criticised by Korat women’s right group

The leader of a women’s rights protection group in Thailand’s Nakhon Ratchasima province has described a dating app’s advertisement as being disrespectful to women.

“The word ‘delicious’ should only be used about food, but the ad used it about women. That is not appropriate. I personally think that the ad disrespects women,” said Chanyanut Surachat.

Several billboards promoting the Tinder dating app have popped up in the Muang district of Nakhon Ratchasima, known locally as Korat.

On the billboards, a question is asked: ‘What is delicious in Korat?’ There were two choices: ‘Fried Korat Noodles’ or ‘Korat ladies’. There was a checkmark next to ‘Korat Ladies’ and a cross next to ‘Fried Korat Noodles’.

Chanyanut added that the ad also implies that fried Korat noodles are not delicious, clearly belittling the signature dish of Korat.

She said that the noodles are also mentioned in the province’s motto, which features the province as the ‘Land of brave women, excellent silk, fried Korat noodles, Phimai Historical Park, and Dan Kwian pottery’.

She said she hopes the owners of the application recognise their insensitivity and take the billboards down, for the sake of all people.

The province is going to host a fair between March 23 and April 3, so she said the billboards should be gone by then.

It looks like the 2nd option says Poo Suay Korat

Would that not mean Beautiful Korat People? (of anywhere along the subjective gender spectrum!)

I thought Beautiful Korat ladies would be Poo Ying Suay Korat

Or does Suay only apply to, or generally imply, the fairer gender?

As an inhabitant of Korat for many years I would like to advise on this language conundrum.

But I can't... because I speak barely acceptable Thai and can read even less.

And these fukkers don't even speak proper Thai but this 'Isaan' dialect.

I wish I could be of more help, but to be honest I don't think that I've suffered over-much from not understanding a word of what goes on around me. They speak mostly bollocks.

Yes, I see that now. I must be getting rusty. Maybe overdue a linguistic refresher safari.

I am no cunning linguist myself. I like deciphering and decrypting strange scripts so I have got the hang of Thai, Khmer and Russkie and a tiny bit of Arabic. But my verbal skills are pretty basic and I cannot hold a conversation in Thai to save my life. I can make myself understood in Thai but I have no idea what they are saying back!

^ My problem exactly, although I don't seem to get the benefits that you do.

My offer of 'swapping lives' is still open, if ever you get bored?

Well done, your reading ability is pretty impressive, especially seeing that, afaik, you haven't lived here full time.

It's what got me into it. Recognizing the letters you've just learned on buses, road signs, shop fronts, number plates etc, and then the click of the word making sense and the knowledge of you reading it. Quite enjoyable, really.

Korat lawyers demand removal of dating app billboards as more appear nationwide

Advertisement billboards for a dating app have now popped up in multiple provinces, including Chiang Rai, Songkhla and Pathum Thani.

The messages they carry are eye-catching and have become popular topics of conversation, much like those in the northeastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima, locally called “Korat”.

In that province, one billboard posed the question, “What is delicious in Korat?” There was a choice: “Fried Korat Noodles” or “Korat ladies”, with a checkmark next to “Korat Ladies” and a cross next to “Fried Korat Noodles”. The ads have attracted mixed reactions.

Meanwhile, members of the Lawyer’s Council of Thailand in Nakhon Ratchasima have demanded that the controversial billboards be removed within seven days, or they will file a complaint with the local police, seeking legal action against the owner of the dating application.

Apasarada Nathampaphol, vice chair of the Nakhon Ratchasima chapter of the Lawyer’s Council of Thailand, said today that the billboards have sparked widespread comment, both negative and positive.

But she and her four colleagues, who are all members of the council, have agreed that they cast the province in a negative light and that the message in the advertisement is degrading to women, as it likens them to food, which constitutes a libel, subject to a fine of 200,000 baht and/or two years of imprisonment on conviction.”

In the southern province of Songkhla, the billboards feature the message: “When you go to Hat Yai, you have to taste…” The first answer, “Hat Yai fried chicken”, had a cross next to it. The second, “Hat Yai men”, had a checkmark.

In the northern province of Chiang Rai, the billboards, with ads for the same dating app but with localised questions, have been seen and images of them have gone viral on social media.

“What is really yummy? Local northern food or local men?” appeared on one, with the checkmark against the latter answer.

In the Rangsit area, just north of Bangkok, the message reads: “Something superb here, liked by everybody,” with the choices of “Rangsit pubs or Rangsit teens?” The checkmark is next to “Rangsit teens”.

Exactly, prior to that they were just slightly risqué and mildly amusing billboards. And gaining national attention… they will garner the wrong sort of attention now.

Better hope the dating app is not owned by foreigners.
