    Phuket: Kiwis clobber Chalong copper

This will be an outrage for a day or three until there's another one

2 New Zealanders attack Phuket traffic policeman
    17 MAR 2024 AT 16:54

PHUKET: Two New Zealand men were arrested after injuring a local traffic policeman and trying to snatch his pistol on Saturday evening, police said.

At 3.50pm on Saturday, Pol Sen Sgt Maj Somsak Noo-iad, a traffic policeman from Chalong station, ordered a stop on Hamish Day, 36, and Oscar Day, 38, on Chaofa (East) Road in tambon Chalong of Muang district as they were riding motorcycles fast in a community zone and failed to stay in the left lane. The visitors did not stop. but instead ped up to escape. Then Pol Sen Sgt Maj Somsak followed them.

The foreigners finally stopped their motorcycles but shouted. The policeman used his mobile phone to record their reactions. The two men then blocked the recording and attacked the policeman, forcing him to the ground and trying to snatch his pistol. During the fight, the pistol went off once but the bullet did not hit anybody.

Other policemen from Chalong station rushed to the scene and arrested both New Zealanders. They were later charged with robbery, obstruction of police duty, physical attack against a policeman, driving without a licence and bribery.

The station chief said that after being arrested, both men offered a bribe but Pol Sen Sgt Maj Somsak turned it down.

Isn't that the first thing to be done, not the last?

Jeezuz. Stupid shits. They need time in prison, whatever is appropriate, banned from Thailand, and a kind request to the DIA in Wellington to yank the passports from these two idiots.

Unless of course some serious moolah is punted.

lets hope they get taken to a back room and "roughed up" a little by any policeman that wants to show support for their colleague.

They're lucky the next cops on the scene didn't arrive guns "blazing". I hope they don't have kids back home. They aren't going to see their dad for some years.

Another scenario to be considered: Fat Somchai hooks two farang on bogus offence who ignore him and carry on. Fatboy pursues them and they stop to find out what the problem is. Fatboy screams and yells at them and draws his handgun. The two farang fearing the worst get the jump on him and disarm Fatboy whereupon one farang removes the ammo clip from the weapon while the other restrains Fatboy. They then try to negotiate with Fatboy having removed lethality from the incident.

Yes, I expect they'll assert something like that was what happened. I've read online that they're both fathers and their own father has a deep pocket. One of these morons was until recently chief executive of his father's company which teaches computer programming in schools across Assia and the Pacific. The moron's name has just been removed from the company's website.

Not riding in the left lane is a genuine offence. Also not stopping when instructed to by a policeman.

If they had been in an accident with a Thai driven pickup and Pol Sen Sgt Maj Fat Somchai showed up they would only be too happy to see him.

But some police in Thailand will tell you you have broken the law when you were in the right hand lane to overtake.

It's common practice for cops looking to stretch their pay.

Different quite differing tones in reporting.

    NZ Granny Herald
The parents of brothers held in Thailand after a dramatic roadside tussle with a police officer have spoken of their distress over the incident as the brothers approach their first court hearing. Hamish and Oscar Day, 36 and 38, were holidaying together in Phuket, Thailand...Their parents, millionaire business and property owners Laurence and Katrina Day, have asked for calm and privacy in the aftermath of the high-profile incident which saw video emerge - and broadcast on Thai television - of disturbing scenes.

“It’s very, very concerning,” Laurence Day told the Herald. “The family is distraught. We’re praying for a good outcome.

Who would have ever expected this? Just a couple of kids on a tourist trip.”

Laurence Day said both men had their own families, including children, in New Zealand who were deeply concerned for their wellbeing.

“They were just on holiday. It’s very difficult. At the moment they’re okay. It’s a very trying time.” He said Hamish Day had managed to get a single text message out to his wife but they had received no other communication.

    The Bangkok Post leans into...

The Granny Herald framing it like a couple of unknowing young kids caught up in the clutches of corrupt brown people. Kids? They're in their mid to late thirties!

I wonder if anyone did a BAC on the 2 guys? I agree with HappyNz. These aren't kids, they are mid to late 30 yr old adults. I mean reaching for an officers gun?...come on! IMHO these 2 clowns are lucky they both didn't get shot.

Maybe a good 1 or 2 year stay will broaden their horizons. The parent reportedly have millions so the families will be cared for on their "extended" stay.

Yes, Thai prisons are grim. That is a good reason to not be a dick and put yourself in the position of getting put in a prison. Millions of tourists manage to visit Thailand and have a grand time. Yet, there will always be a few who decide they’re immune from consequences.
    pues, estamos aqui

I'm curious how 2 married Kiwi men can vacation for a couple of weeks in Thailand without their wives and children. Perhaps Kiwi women are buffalos.

From what I gathered in the video, the cop was going for the gun first and they have spontaneously acted in self-defence.

They also appear to have pretty good control over the situation, considering they have not been shop and I'm sure the cop is just fine.

    Possible MMA/BJJ training.

How about a background check on the cop too?

I'll go with muay thai training camp. They don't seem the golfing type.

I suspect a suitable contribution to the Phuket authorities will ensure this regrettable incident is considered to be no more than a misunderstanding. Smiles, much shaking of hands and an exchange of flowers and fruits with the usual photo op could well ensue. Frankly, it looks more and more like Fatboy Somchai picked on the wrong guys to shakedown. What is guaranteed is that Somchai’s evidence is bollox, the farang were not speeding, had not committed any other offence and were not instructed properly to stop.Somchai got into a tantrum and chased after them screaming and yelling and then pulled his gun out to do who knows what.
