Chiang Mai running sandals made from car tire rubber gain popularity

The Chiang Mai handmade running sandals, renowned for their comfort and ability to alleviate foot pain, have become a hot trend among both local and international runners and health enthusiasts.

Surasak Suebwongchai, 47 known as Pee Mor, the creator of the running sandals continues to stitch these sandals in his small shop in Chiang Mai’s Muang district with the same dedication he had when he crafted his first pair eight years ago.

As a barefoot runner himself, who holds a degree in sports science, he conceived the idea of making sandals from car tire rubber, securing them with tent cords, and using a cowhide strap. With his own experience in running, he has developed his sandals to create a snug and comfortable fit for runners.

Initially made for his friends, including one with diabetes who experienced discomfort wearing regular running shoes, his sandals gradually gained recognition and popularity among trail runners for their comfort, durability, and ability to withstand various weather conditions. Priced between 1,490 and 1,590 baht per pair, these sandals come in three models: thin, regular, and hybrid pro, catering to different preferences and needs. (TNA)

    A recent house guest, maybe?

Anyway, not the footwear highlighted in the story obviously.

Though I'm not saying I hold out much hope.

Just the term 'running sandals' is clearly bollocks.

They’re pretty much identical, there’s a couple of pics in the original link. There’s not much variation on how these sandals/running shoes will work.

^^^^ the soles look like they have good traction & I can see why trail runners would like them. However, the trail runners that I know/ have seen all wear running shoes. Personal choice, I think.

Yes, they look like the sandals of the Viet Cong, also made from old tires/ tyres.

I wouldn't buy them (the ones from Chiang Mai), not because they're sandals but because I don't like the design (the T strap in the middle).

I have sandals that I use for trekking sometimes (when I know that there will be river crossings or wet parts). I bought 2 pairs: one has straps made of some plastic material, the other has straps made of a rope-like material. They have pros & cons. The traction is better in the one with the rope-like design. The plastic straps feel better vs the ropes - sometimes the ropes dig into the skin.

^I'm the one with the multicolor rope straps. I also have a pair similar to the one across from me (the non-rope straps). Btw, it was rainy & muddy when we hiked - so pardon the muddy feet.

I think the brand Teva has a similar design (the non rope one).

Sometimes I wear closed hiking shoes - depends on weather & terrain.
