British Man Arrested with Diazepam in Karon

A British man was arrested after he was found illegally in possession of Diazepam in Karon.

The Karon Police told the Phuket Express that earlier this week they set up a routine checkpoint in front of the Nong Harn Lake. They stopped a taxi car, and a foreign man, who was later identified only as Mr. Thomas, 27, a British national who according to police looked suspicious as he waited inside the taxi.

Karon police did not specifically reveal what made Mr. Thomas look suspicious but The Phuket Express notes that random tests for drugs or illegal substances are legal in Thailand.

They searched him and found one Diazepam pill on him. He was taken to the Karon Police Station to face charges of illegal possession of a category 4 drug (Diazepam). The Phuket Express noted that Diazepam is sometimes used to relieve symptoms of anxiety and alcohol withdrawal.

Perhaps there's more to it than just this one pill.

    Agreed
You can go to most clinics or hospitals, and get a prescription for them, and there are pharmacies on Phuket that will sell them, over-the-counter.

Hope there is something more to it. Getting busted of one single pill of Valium that could have been prescribed seems a bit much.

the thai police can pretty much do what they want, especially with foreigners and especially on phuket at the moment. i seem to remember a case where an australian women was imprisoned for stealing a beermat from a phuket pub after the management insisted on pressing charges.

That’s a 100% certainty. How many times have you been stopped while in a taxi and then had all your bag and pockets searched? Never? Yeah, me neither. Not saying they didn’t search him but how did they know this Brit chancer was a druggie?

    it’s not rocket science.

You’ve used that line before, and it was dubious then.

The post is perfectly factual. The point is how did the police know that this dodgy Brit had some illegal medication or drugs on him? He was either as high as a kite after having a big session and they noticed that or they spoke to his drug dealer.

Probably won't help with his anxiety.

2 times in BKK. and once on samui.
once in a taxi, and twice on the street.

the taxi stop was at a roadblock, they went through my pockets as well as those of the taxi driver and they searched every nook and cranny of the taxi. very business like, found nothing, smiled and waved us on.

on the street, one time a couple of cops on a motorbike stopped me and searched me, they were polite and friendly, i think they just wanted to show off their english language abilities, which were nothing to write home about.

my thai driving licence and passport copy seemed to satisfy their curiosity.

the other time was early evening on samui, and i was stopped by a very drunk cop who demanded i empty my pockets. he reeked of booze and was very intimidating, a few locals gathered round and he eventually walked off.

In a space of how many years? The point being it’s not a regular occurrence, although it can happen. Just chancing upon a Brit chancer with drugs on him will be miss and hit affair.

Crikey! I have a few that are usually in my bag. Prescribed by a hospital in Thailand for back muscle spasm, which can sometimes come on without warning. I guess I'll leave them at home.

Really? I have been here since basically 2005 and have never been approached by any BIB. One time I got pulled aside by a road side stop and asked to show my passport which I never carry. I showed a pic on my phone and my Thai DL and that was it.

There is a lot more to this 1 pill story. But as it goes, how one looks, dresses, behaves is always a driver in why they question various people.

Thus the reason that it’s perfectly understandable to know that tax has been stopped and strip searched three times.

If you haven't been stopped and searched you probably haven't been going to the ̶r̶i̶g̶h̶t̶ wrong places.

Drugs such as Diazapam are not dispensed in Thailand by pharmacists but are prescribed by a doctor from a hospital’s stock.

I have been subjected to a street search several times and on one notable occasion was strip searched and had my buttocks spread but this was in England when I was 19 - 20 years old and came with the territory where I was selling hash and acid.

There is some reality in that for sure but I have been out and about late night with business colleague's drinking until early AM. Walked on some streets staggering back to my hotel room in my days and never been even looked at. But again, lots depends on the individual. Like in the US, while its called 'Profiling" now, there is a lot to be said about a cop and instincts.

    strip searched? hardly.

just asked to empty my pockets.

my dress is always clean shaven smart casual, i.e. no monger sandals, wife beater vests, tatts, man bun, filthy dreads, footballer crop, shaven pate, logo t shirts with beer, environmental or supposedly amusing slogans, or wearing elephant pants, multi pocketted cargo shorts or tesco bargain basement dross or market rubbish.

i present as a man of my class should, with a decent hair cut, long but tidy, and with logo free t shirts, pressed button shirts, and with linen or lightweight slacks or uniqlo shorts and of course, proper trainers or sketchers. i am in fact, a very hansum man.

A Dutch friend of mine and I were stopped once on the way back from Chiang Rai at a checkpoint. The cops had us pull over and throughly searched the car. They chatted with us the whole time. We decided the cops were bored and wanted to talk to some falang women.

Can you spend some time assisting Mendip. Camo cargo shorts and Jesus slippers are really out from a style point of view.
