Thai government plans to ban recreational cannabis use

BANGKOK: The Thai government will urgently move a Bill to ban the recreational use of cannabis, the health minister said on Tuesday (Feb 6), after the kingdom decriminalised the drug in 2022.

Cannabis was taken off the list of banned narcotics in June 2022 under the previous government, which included the pro-legalisation Bhumjaithai party.

The move prompted hundreds of cannabis dispensaries to sprout around the country, particularly in Bangkok, provoking concern from critics who urged the need for tighter legislation.

On Tuesday, the kingdom's health minister said the new Bill - which bans the recreational use of cannabis - will be proposed to the Cabinet meeting next week.

"The new Bill will be amended from the existing one to only allow the use of cannabis for health and medicinal purposes," Chonlanan Srikaew told reporters. "The use for fun is considered wrong."

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, who took office last August, has frequently voiced his opposition to the recreational use of the drug and said it should only be allowed for medicinal use.

There was fresh pressure from the public last weekend after attendees of British rock band Coldplay's shows in Bangkok complained on social media saying "the entire concert smelled like marijuana".

What "existing" bill, he hasn't even submitted one yet and he's said all along this would be in it.

It was in the last one too.

When I went to see Bob Marley at the Finsbury Park Rainbow you could hardly see the stage through the thick clouds of ganja smoke.

Weed, 100% safer than booze, I guess alcohol and tobacco sales have plummeted that much that action is now required.

I'm sure PC Plod will be cheering this bill on.

Thailand will ban recreational use of cannabis by the end of 2024, though its use will still be allowed for medicinal purposes, Thai health minister Cholnan Srikaew told Reuters in an interview.

This comes two years after Thailand became the first country in Southeast Asia to legalise use of the drug for recreational purposes in 2022, after it was approved for medicinal use in 2018.

    <snip>

Under the draft law, those found using cannabis recreationally will be given a fine of up to 60,000 baht (S$2,200).

Those selling cannabis for recreational purposes and participating in advertisement or marketing of buds, resin, extract or smoking devices may face jail terms of up to a year, a fine of up to 100,000 baht ($3,700), or both.

Tougher punishment will also be meted out for cannabis farming without a license. Offenders may be given jail terms from one to three years and fines from 20,000 baht (S$700) to 300,000 baht (S$11,200).

Everyone somehow managed to grow, harvest and put their crops to market within 24 hours of the legalization bill.

I wonder if they will all die and disappear just as quick.

People had plenty of notice of the decriminalisation.

The failed bill in the last parliament didn't seem to deter them; I don't know if this one will. There seems a little more determination and support this time.

Up in my neck of the woods recreational ganja was everywhere long before it was legalized and will be here long after this law change.
