Father kills family over debt caused by call center scam in Samut Prakan

Deputy national police chief Gen. Surachet Hakparn has ordered a hunt for a money lending app scam syndicate that deceived a woman in Samut Prakan, possibly leading to a tragic family murder, committed by her husband last night.

The incident may be related to a fraudulent loan scheme in which the woman was deceived to transfer money by a call center gang.

It is believed that her husband was under extreme stress from previous debt and the loss of about one million baht to the call center scam that led him to murder his wife and two sons, aged 11, 13.

He killed them with a knife before he cut his throat in an attempt to take his own life. His wife and children were dead but he was severely injured.

Following the incident, authorities immediately dispatched a team to the crime scene to expedite the search for the root causes of the family tragedy. This includes a thorough examination of the information related to the loan app, as well as the financial trails to identify the operators behind the illegal money lending app. It remains unclear whether the app originates within Thailand or abroad.

Tomorrow, he will convene an investigative meeting at the Bang Kaew Police Station in Samut Prakan province. (TNA)

Call centre gang suspect apprehended at Aranyaprathet

A Thai woman, wanted by police in Samut Prakan province as a suspected member of a Cambodia-based call centre gang, was arrested at the Thai immigration checkpoint in Aranyaprathet district of Sa Kaeo province on Tuesday night.

The 19-year-old, only identified as “Suchada”, crossed the border from Cambodia’s Poipet township Tuesday evening through the checkpoint and was immediately recognised as matching the Samut Prakan police description of one of the suspects wanted in connection with the murder of a mother and her two children by her husband, who tried, unsuccessfully, to end his own life as well.

According to the police, the family was cheated by a call centre gang, based in Cambodia, out of over 1.7 million baht, which they borrowed against equity in their house. In desperation over the debt and the prospect of their house being repossessed, the husband killed his wife and two children before trying to commit suicide.

Police allege that the female suspect works for the call centre gang in Cambodia. She will be escorted to Bang Kaeo police in Samut Prakan to face charges.

Deputy police chief in Cambodia seeking help to track down call centre gang members

Pol Gen Surachate Hakparn, the deputy national police, is in Cambodia today (Tuesday) to seek cooperation from police there in the arrests of nine Thai and Chinese suspects working in a call centre gang.

They allegedly involved in the deaths of three Thai family members and the attempted suicide of the family head. Surachate had with them arrest warrants issued by a Thai court.

The Cambodia-based call centre scam came to light when a man in Samut Prakan killed his wife and two children with a knife and attempted to commit suicide with the same knife at their house on August 28. The man survived the suicide bid.

Police investigators discovered that the wife had taken out a loan from an online platform, operated by the gang, which promised free interest. The gang later charged her exorbitant interest, until her debt ballooned to about 1.7 million baht. Her husband had to mortgage their house, but still could not cover the debt. In desperation, he decided to kill his loved ones and commit suicide.

One woman who opened a “mule” bank account for the gang was arrested at a border checkpoint in Aranyaprathet on August 30th, when she tried to escape to Cambodia.

Pol Gen Surachate told the media that he hopes for good cooperation from the Cambodian police.

He also met with the Thai ambassador in Cambodia to discuss how to help several Thai nationals who were tricked into working for call centre gangs in the country.
