Thailand to host Moto GP world championship in September after two-year halt

The Thai government has approved the organization of the Grand Prix motorcycle racing or ‘Moto GP’ in Buriram province after a two-year halt, expecting to generate millions of baht in tourism.

Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul revealed yesterday, April 27th, after a meeting with the committee for organizing the Moto GP and the Minister of Tourism and Sports that the government agreed to organize the racing event this year as more than 80 percent of the total population in the country had received the first dose of Covid-19 vaccination and more than 36 percent received the booster shots. The health care system, including hospitals, drugs, medical supplies, and medical personnel, was also sufficient and ready to support the government’s endemic disease plan.

Anutin said: “After two years of event cancellations due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the government eventually gave a green light to organize MotoGP this year. It would be the country’s first world-class activity after the pandemic and would drive the domestic economy as well as building confidence among the public and the tourists who would travel into the country.”

“The latest Moto GP race in 2019 had attracted more than 50,000 tourists. Most of them also continued their traveling in other parts of the country which stimulated the economy especially in hotels, local accommodations, restaurants, souvenir shops in Buriram and other northeastern provinces.”

The Minister continued that this year’s Moto GP would be arranged in the form of ‘Sports Tourism’. The Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) had signed a contract with the event company to host the event between September 30 and October 2, 2022, at the Chang International Circuit, Buriram.

I'd like to go to see it this year. I was previously deterred by a motorcycling enthusiastic friend who had been unhappy with his visit a few years back. In particular he said it was extremely difficult to find any accommodation near to Buriram, he ended up somewhere about an hour out.

Why would they care, not as if they are racing on public roads.

Wonder if the Thailand has informed Dorna the race is on in September ?

Correct, and some of them don't even ride recreationally on public roads either. Can clearly recall an interview with Mick Doohan (5 times Moto GP world champion in case anyone doesn't know) and he was asked what sort of bikes he rode when at home. "I don't ride on public roads, way too dangerous for me" was his reply.

Attended the last race 2 years ago. Buriram great host city. Hotels are reserved year or years in advance. Had a great time with group of friends.

You could always splurge 1390 euros for the VIP package, free booze, food, nice seats, paddock/pit walks, meet and greet with the riders, parking next to the stand, etc.

My mates with extra tickets invited me to join them in the past. Took up their kind invitation 2018 and 2019. Had a great day at a very well organized venue. Just under a 2hr drive from home to track so hotel not needed but agree, finding one is a bitch.

We done a sneaky and jumped on accommodation the minute they changed the schedule to Sep/Oct and booked 3 villas with a shared pool.

Then we find out they cancelled 2 of our villas and gave a story about double bookings. So Basically someone's offered to pay more and pushed us out.

Well, they're gonna have to share that pool and property with at least 8 pissed up tattooed bikers crammed into a villa with only 4 beds so good luck to them and I hope for their sakes they are not on a family trip cos there's not gonna be much peace for shuteye.

Of course TiT. I was shocked when Buriram was announced as Thai MotoGP venue. Buriram like most of Isaan is not at all a tourist destination so no surprise to me accommodation is way below needed for the race and will remain so.

Arses. But as Norton mentioned, TIT.

Good luck on keeping the remaining villa.

Sounds about right. No chance for us mere commoners.

As it goes, we are quite content with the freedom of the side stands too.

However, this year asked us which side stand section we wanted, either side of the straights or around the twisties section. So they have divided the freedom.

Last time we were at the straights so we went for the twisty section this year.

I'm also unsure if I can make it depending on rig operations but better to be prepared just in case.

Stand C on the Saturday was ok up the back and we were Stand B for the Race.

I'm hoping to see most of the track from the back of Stand D this time.
