Governments from the top, to provincial warriors, have been in denial for too long. What worked for certain parts of Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket was always under the radar and tax free for both sides. It simply didn’t exist, but created the basis for tourist dollars spent elsewhere. Everything from hotels to 7/11 fed the tourism funding that town councils blew on corrupt pretty projects, that needed doing again two years later. No real infrastructure was provided and the shiny glass and steel Bangkok frontages hid the seedy underbelly that criminal types used to launder their I’ll gotten gains.
Farming has been subsidized, more carefully since Ms Thaksin blew it all on rice. Unfortunately, the sex trade never existed so it couldn’t be given any support.
The real reason for faux single travelers to visit Thailand has disappeared, because it never really existed. Whatever will those poor Isaan farm girls do now? P4P was pricing itself out of the market anyway. Collecting STDs became too expensive.
Fishing villages turned into US forces R&R centers really had nowhere else to go, and the government has got its wish. Mongering is officially dead. Killed by a different virus!

Had to drive the length of the strip to get home - took me hours. The Firehouse opened at noon and closed at 4AM. Two 8-hour shits of countless young lasses. We worked half days on Saturdays and I used to hold my end of week staff meeting in The Firehouse. Amazing times!

The Zanzibar in Soi 11 at its peak was a reasonably expensive restaurant and live jazz venue that had a large 'footprint' - that has gone and is clearly earmarked for development. The Rosabieng was a landmark Thai restaurant and banquet venue, again with a large garden with live music has closed down too and will be gone.

COVID has simply accelerated the drift away from the traditional Western demographic and Bangkok is becoming more ASEAN and Thaicentric. What I have noticed more is the increasing numbers of Thai patronising western-style outlets. We want to Kai New Zealand, in Sathorn, over Xmas and it was packed with at least 60% of customers being Thai.

I can't see Nana/Soi Cowboy lasting the course, there simply isn't the demand for whores anymore and if you walk up Soi 4 and scrutinise the clientele in the bars slouched over their beers, all slack-jawed, dead-eyed, beaten-down, geriatric, blue-collar oiks mostly, then you will no doubt conclude the writing is on the wall for the likes of the NEP which of course has been little more than a laundromat washing boiler room money.

The sex industry as a tourist driver is evaporating everywhere. Pattaya's beer bar strips are closing down everywhere and new hotels and malls are replacing them. Bangkok is changing too.

Good riddance.

...I suspect that once demand increases for Pat Pong activities, vendors will be more than able to reseedy the soi and all the other locations known to attract the unfortunate...

^No. Mabini is not part of Manila. Mabini is in Batangas Province where I live, 50 miles or so South of Manila. There is, however, a Mabini Street in Ermita. Mabini was a Filipino statesman and revolutionary hero - lots of places bear his name.

That era you mention was surely Del Pilar's finest days, I was never a big fan of Manila but could definitely understand people's attraction to the place when bars were in full swing like Firehouse, Lovebirds, New Bangkok, Misty's, Roadhouse, Blue Hawaii, and so on. To have a time machine...

I do remember New Wave Bar though on soi 7; there were some messy days/nights/weekends spent in and around there.

For all its bars, one of my biggest complaints about Bangkok used to be that there was never really a place that had the feel of a good pub. Maybe the Black Swan at Asok and the old Finnegans at Nana came close.

Mark Smith's Roadhouse was one of the great ones. When Ermita folded, he moved it to Angeles. Given that this was just after Pinatubo, folks thought he was nuts. Turned out to be one of AC's best bars, Mark eventually went back to the US, and died in CA. of cancer. RIP.
