Songkran Holiday This Year Will Be Extended to 6 Days

BANGKOK (NNT) - The Songkran holiday will be extended to six days this year, after the Cabinet has approved a special holiday on April 12. The Songkran festival break will now run from April 10 to April 15 (Saturday-Thursday).

Meanwhile, Culture Minister Itthiphol Kunplome said water splashing will probably be allowed during the Songkran festival because the daily number of new Covid-19 cases had dropped from three digits to only two digits.

He said the government is paying more attention to the number of people at event venues, and will find a balance between helping the economy and the prevention of new clusters of Covid-19 which would spread the disease in communities.

Mr Itthiphol said detailed measures for the Songkran festival would be presented to a sub-committee of the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration on Thursday.

The guy in charge of Covid operations stated that water-splashing might not be allowed as it is incompatible with face masks.

Panel chief opposed to allowing water splashing during Songkran

The sheer stupidity of this incoherent bumbling government is beyond reason.

Other than government members and the elite, and possibly token health workers ( there are around 38,000 doctors and 200,000 registered nurse and I don't quite think they have all been vaccinated ), no-one has have been vaccinated leaving pretty much the entire population vulnerable to infection if normal social intercourse is permitted to resume.

So, here we are on the eve of a heralded national holiday that is to be extended in order to generate money, and the culture minister has publicly stated everyone can frolic in much the same way they did when there was no global pandemic that so far has killed several millions worldwide.

So, the fruits of a year long quarantine of an entire country and the enforcement of a social distancing policy restricting infection is to be gambled away in a week's celebration of national exuberance.

Whenever one thinks they cannot get any more foolish, someone comes along and proves you utterly wrong.

    No he hasn't.

He's basically said 'Answering that question is above my pay grade but I'm not going to be the bearer of bad tidings'.

BoJo scaled back the increased freedoms in the UK for Christmas on December 19, and even that was only because of new variants.

At least you've limited your comments of stupidity to the government rather than tarring the country's entire Thai population though. So well done on that.

The fact is though that there is no shortage of parallel stupidity overseas.

You really are a sap at times.

Ittiplueme Kunplueme is a scion of the Kunplueme dynasty that controls Chonburi and was in fact the mayor of Pattaya for over eight years. He got the government job in return for his family giving support to Prayuth in his election campaign.

Vested interests dear boy, vested interests.

Bozo the Clown was solely responsible for the second and third waves in the UK because he ignored the warnings from SAGE on the grounds of commercial need.

That fucking stupid ' eat-out-to-help-out ' campaign ensured its spread and boosted the death rates.

Songkran should be cancelled as a public holiday until the greater proportion of the population are vaccinated.

Your post above is completely irrelevant to this.

That you're working yourself up into a lather yet again just shows that you completely fail to understand how Thais communicate with each other.

I guess it's not surprising in your concrete box in the sky, with the few Thais forced into interacting with you doing so with an air of detached bemusement.

I will take the light hearted approach. Saturday to Thursday holiday, can you imagine the traffic jam back to BKK on Thursday? Not a person one will be at work, school or university on the Friday. So we have a Saturday to Sunday the next week holiday. Anyone heard of a longer one?

It seems entirely sensible to me in the circumstances.

Tourism must be on its knees.

To be concerned about how sensible people are is justified, though.

Obviously water fights will be utterly stupid.

A majority of people support banning or limiting water splashing during next month's Songkran festival, to prevent the spread of Covid-19, according to an opinion survey by the National Institute of Development Administration, Nida Poll.

The poll was conducted via telephone interviews on March 15-16, involving 1,315 people aged 15 years or more of various levels of education and occupations throughout the country.

The pollster reported on Wednesday that 43.73% of respondents said water splashing should be prohibited nationwide during Songkran; 20.45% said it should be allowed only in areas not hit by the second outbreak of Covid-19; 17.87% said water splashing should be allowed in all areas with "new normal" measures in place such as wearing face shields, waterproof eye coverings and raincoats; 10.80% said it should be allowed nationwide; and, 7.15% that it should be allowed only in areas with no new Covid-19 infections in the previous 14 days.

Asked whether they would be concerned about the pandemic spreading again if water splashing were allowed, a clear majority, 64.56%, said "yes" - with 26.54% saying they would be highly concerned because the Covid-19 situation had not been resolved, and 38.02% said they would be quite worried because water splashing could lead to a third wave.

On the other side, 35.44% said "no" - with 18.78% saying they would not worry because most people know how to protect themselves, while 16.66% would not worry at all, believing that government measures against the coronavirus spreading during the festival would be effective.

Asked what they were most concerned about during Songkran, 43.95% said road accidents; 38.17% more Covid-19 infections; 15.29% dull tourism and the slow economy; and, 2.59% crime.

Asked what was more important, water splashing or Covid-19 prevention, 82.28% said they would rather go without water splashing; 15.29% said they would rather risk being infected so they could enjoy water games during Songkran; and, 2.43% were uncertain.

Poll: Wide support for banning water splashing
