    Strange/Bizarre News from Japan

Although Japan is well known for it`s low crime rate, compared to other countries, there is no shortage of strange/bizarre stories in the local media. I am posting stories that are mostly from a website called Tokyo Reporter, as this is the only site that publishes the stories in English. It`s basically Japanese tabloid news, that mainstream English media do not publish. I believe that the crimes reported are mostly commited due to the pressures of living in such a rigid society。

Cop posed as realtor to molest woman in residence

SAITAMA (TR) – Saitama Prefectural Police have arrested a 32-year-old male police officer who posed as a real estate agent in gaining access to the residence of a woman to molest her, reports TBS News (Oct. 10).
On the night of August 26, Koji Tono, an officer for railroads, claimed to be a real estate agent in gaining access to the residence of the woman, aged in her 20s, in Minami Ward of Saitama City. Tono then allegedly fondled her body.
“I entered the residence, but I did not touch [her],” the suspect was quoted by police in partially denying the allegations.
At the time of the incident, Tono was off-duty. Afterward, the woman telephoned a male acquaintance who alerted police.
Tono became a person of interest for police after an examination of security camera footage taken in the area showed a vehicle with a license plate that could be traced to the suspect.
Katsuhiko Kondo, of the Saitama police, said, “With the act being unbecoming of an officer, it is highly regrettable. I would like to apologize to the victim and the citizens of the prefecture. The matter will be dealt with harshly.”

Konbini employee cleaned out till on first (and last) day at 30 stores nationwide

Between August, 2017 and October of the following year, Nojima, a resident of Shiga Prefecture, pulled swindles at 30 convenience stores in 16 administrative districts across the nation.
The total amount stolen by Nojima — from registers and safes — was about 10 million yen. In applying for the jobs, he presented a work history that included a fake name, police said.
“He’d stay at a hotel near a convenience store that he was targeting. He made inquiries by telephone or in person,” an investigator tells the tabloid.
During the interview, Nojima offered to start “work” that day. “Because he left the place so quickly, he had no real chance to interact with other employees,” the investigative source continued.
On his first day at a store, Nojima would stuff cash from the register or from a safe in a back office into the pockets of his uniform when the attention of other employees was diverted.
If the haul was big, he would insert the bills into a plastic bag from the store. After exiting the premises, he would discard his uniform.
    Apprehension

After two incidents emerged in Oita, police made a wanted poster. On October 30, 2018, police received a tip from an employee at a store in Oita City about “a person resembling” the man in poster. The employee said that the person was coming to start a shift at 3:00 p.m. that same day.
Upon the arrival of Nojima, officers nabbed him at the store. Police later learned that over a 10-year period he had been arrested three times for the same crime.
According to police, Nojima’s smallest yield (50,000 yen) came from a store in Kanagawa Prefecture. Meanwhile, his largest was 1.279 million yen, from a store in Shiga.
“He was on a pace of about two or three [capers] a month,” the investigator said. “But after the Shiga job, he didn’t pull another one for about three months.”
While moving around the nation, Nojima traveled by public transportation. The defendant stayed nights at business hotels.
In addition to the aforementioned “living expenses,” the stolen money was used “on entertainment and his next crime,” the investigator said. “But he didn’t gamble or drink, so he had a sound foundation [in some ways].”

Police officer ‘looking after’ women’s toilet accused of trespassing

FUKUOKA (TR) – It wasn’t exactly a stake out.
Fukuoka Prefectural Police on Sunday arrested a 47-year-old police officer for allegedly trespassing into the women’s bathroom at a convenience store in Fukuoka City, reports Nikkan Sports (Sept. 30).
“I entered the women’s toilet in looking after it,” Takashi Atsuchi, a sergeant at the Higashi Police Station, was quoted by police in admitting to the allegations.
But that is perhaps an understatement.
In July, employees at the store, located in the Hirao area of Chuo Ward, repeatedly alerted law enforcement after an unknown person blocked the toilet with toilet paper rolls on multiple occasions, police said.
A police officer is believed to have repeatedly blocked a women’s toilet at a convenience store in Fukuoka City in July (Twitter)On Sunday morning, a staff member at the store provided police with the description of a suspicious man and the license plate of his vehicle. He had allegedly entered the toilet of the store at 9:40 a.m.
That person turned out to be Atsuchi. It is believed that he enjoyed peering into the store at the frustrated looks on the faces of women who could not use the toilet, reports Fuji News Network (Sept. 30).
“As a police officer, I would like to offer a deep apology to the citizens of the prefecture,” said Kuniya Munesugi of the Fukuoka police. “After confirming the facts in the case, we will deal with the matter strictly.”
Police are now seeking a motive for the crime.

The authorities don't seem to have the same kind of punishment mentality there as they do in the West.

I've heard (from a Japanese) that if a person confesses and seems contrite, often they get let off.

But for hard core criminals, they get hard labour which involves sewing all day at a machine, and not being allowed to talk. I'm not sure how strongly this is enforced or how brutal the guards are.

Tokyo: Accused women’s underwear thief found with (only) 78 pairs

TOKYO (TR) – When it comes to the theft of women’s underwear, the haul of Yuki Endo could be one of the lowest on record.
Tokyo Metropolitan Police on Friday announced the arrest of Endo, a 35-year-old company employee, over the alleged theft of two pairs of underwear from a woman, aged in her 20s, in Machida City on September 5, reports TBS News (Sept 27).
“I stole to satisfy my sexual desire and garner thrills,” the suspect was quoted by police. “I have an interest in women’s buttocks. But I only steal underwear.”
Yuki Endo (Twitter)Over the past two years, police have received reports of similar thefts in Machida and nearby Sagamihara City.
A search of the residence of the suspect revealed 78 pairs of women’s underwear, police said.
Other hauls by suspects recorded this year thus far have numbered 200, 1,100, 400 and 330, rendering the output of Edo rather meager.

Man admits slamming into women who walk and use smartphones

TOKYO (TR) – There are warnings — and then there are warnings.
Tokyo Metropolitan Police have arrested a 49-year-old man who has admitted to slamming into multiple women he has seen walking while using their smartphones to “warn them,” reports Jiji Press (Sept. 26).
At around 8:50 a.m. on June 25, Yoshiyuki Kiuchi, a company employee, allegedly rammed his body into a woman, 34, as she used her smartphone while walking along a platform for the Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line at Nijubashimae Station.
The woman suffered injuries to her right elbow and chest that required three weeks to heal, the Marunouchi Police Station said.
Yoshiyuki Kiuchi (Twitter)Kiuchi, who has been accused of inflicting injury, admits to the allegations. “Two years ago, I slammed into another woman who was walking and using her smartphone,” Kiuchi was quoted. “She went tumbling down the stairs. Since it is dangerous, I slam into [persons] to warn them about once every three days.”
Kiuchi, a resident of Fujisawa City, Kanagawa Prefecture, surfaced as a person of interest after an examination of security camera footage.
Police are aware of two other cases that took place at the same station earlier this year. On the morning of June 7, a woman in her 30s suffered at least one broken bone in a similar incident. Then, on the morning of September 11, a woman in her 50s experienced a wound to her head.

Nagano: Brothers not prosecuted for living with corpse of father

NAGANO (TR) – Prosecutors have announced the non-prosecution of two brothers for allegedly living with the corpse of their father at their residence in Nagano City earlier this year, reports Nippon News Network (Sept. 20).
On August 30, officers working off a tip entered the residence, located in the Kawanakajimamachi area, and found the body of the 59-year-old man.
The following day, police accused Junya Nagata, a 31-year-old part-time employee, and his brother, 29, of abandoning a corpse.

The suspect, who was arrested on suspicion of assault on September 9, admits to the allegations. “The woman had the type of hair I like,” the suspect was quoted by the Koka Police Station.
According to police, the suspect was seated behind the woman on the bus, which was bound for a rest area in Nishinomiya City, Hyogo.
After the woman fell asleep, the suspect allegedly used a pair of scissors to clip off her hair on three occasions. He then placed the locks inside a plastic bag.
After noticing that her hair had been cut, the woman notified the driver. The bus company then tipped off police.
Shiga police arrested the suspect when the bus arrived at a service area in Koka City, Shiga.

And yes, apparently its very hard time if you end up on the slammer. They either make you work, or have you sit on the floor japanese style in a one meter square room, and you are not allowed to speak or make eye contact or you will be beaten with a stick.

Boy, 15, plunges to death in apparent suicide; tried to take his life 3 other times

SAITAMA (TR) – Tatsunosuke Komatsuda, who was repeatedly bullied while a middle school student in Kawaguchi City, was left with a severe leg injury after a suicide attempt, his third, in 2017.
On Sunday, the 15-year-old died in a fatal plunge from an apartment building. The city’s board of education revealed on Monday that it is seeking to confirm whether his death was in fact the result of a suicide, reports the Sankei Shimbun (Sept. 9).
According to the Kawaguchi City Board of Education, Komatsuda entered the middle school in April, 2016. The following month, he began being bullied by elder students and members of the soccer team.
On two occasions in September and October of that year, Komatsuda attempted suicide by hanging at his residence. The following April, he leaped from a building near his residence, causing fractures to his skull.
Prior to the three attempts to take his life, Komatsuda wrote a letter to a teacher in which he sought “help.” However, the teacher dismissed the request, the board said in a previous announcement last year.

After the third suicide attempt, Komatsuda stopped attending class. Then school then acknowledged that he was being bullied.
In November, the board of education commissioned a third-party investigation to determine whether the boy was bullied. It was later suspended after he did not provide reasonable responses to queries.
In February of last year, Komatsuda returned to school in a wheelchair, the result of injuries sustained in the third suicide attempt. Several months later, the investigation was resumed after he became cooperative.
After the investigation was concluded, the results were not provided to the family.
“The bullying while [he] was a middle school student and the lies of the board of education are something that I cannot get out of my head,” a relative of the boy told the Tokyo Shimbun. “It is regrettable.”
    Staying at his grandparents

On Saturday, Komatsuda, who graduated from the school this past March, was staying at the apartment of his grandparents in Kawaguchi, the family told the Tokyo Shimbun.
That night, he went missing. At around 1:00 a.m. the following morning, he was found collapsed on the premises of the apartment building. He was later confirmed dead. He is believed to have jumped to his death from the top floor of the building.
His mother later found a note in his room at their residence. “The board of education are liars,” it read. “They protected the bullies. So, from now, it is goodbye.”

(TR) – Tochigi Prefectural Police have arrested a 54-year-old man in Utsunomiya City after he was found to be living with the corpse of his mother, reports the Sankei Shimbun (Sept. 8).

Nakagawa, who was arrested on suspicion of abandoning a corpse on Saturday, admits to the allegations. “After my mother died on August 5, I didn’t have money to cover the expense for burial. So left her as is,” the suspect was quoted by the Utsunomiya-Higashi Police Station.
The corpse of an 87-year-old woman was found inside her residence in Utsunomiya City on Friday (Twitter)On Friday morning, an agent for the residence tipped off police, saying that they were unable to contact the occupants. “There’s a foul smell coming from inside, and I’d like to take a look,” the agent reportedly said.
