Just a thought, and of course it's not practical if at all possible to properly lockdown entire countries, while even with a global effort there are not enough resources to quarantine hundreds of thousands of people with new infections daily, but even with those limitations I don't rate volunteer self isolation as an effective measure.
Make it law, under emergency measures, for those confirmed as infected that cannot be housed and treated by state, to self isolate under specified conditions. Sure, that's also impractical since most people do not have the luxury of a spare room or the money, understanding or even intelligence to do the right thing.
So, best solution is to continue with the status quo and each gov does as it sees fit, because one way or the other every one of them will be subject to scathing criticism during the inquest once it is over.
And probably give China a half decent smack for good measure.
These international travel restrictions are about 2 months too late.
China shouldn't have hid the truth from the world and have been put on lockdown.
Everyone is going to get it, It's just a case of staying strong now.
All to do with sentiment, when the market is gloomy as it's been they look for and will find something positive, precisely like the perception that govs are doing more and that should lessen the negative effects that are already priced in. But as you say, if infections/deaths increase in Europe/US over the weekend, the easing we had on Friday will soon disappear.
Also, many people can't rake it in fast enough during volatile periods like this.
Wait!
Wot?
Is there a glitch in the Matrix? Am I about to agree with something Buttfly posted?
Got briefed earlier in the week the government was going for a contain and restrict policy with the aim not to prevent the virus but to slow down the spread to avoid the economic impact that would be caused by a complete countrywide shutdown.
The fait accompli approach would seem to be the smartest atm. Not what people want to hear, but true none the less.
Some people think it don't, but it be.
just seen the neighbours go and come back from shopping. The usual bags are not evident and when we exchanged hello's they lamented the lack of anything they had on their list. Clutching a 4 pack of the "value" loo roll liberated from a convenience store at £1.99p and an own brand pack of tea bags they trooped in doors. I said there was a fancy dress party tonight in one of the local clubs and they could perhaps see who was coming as a mummy and buy their costume off them afterwards.
I may have to explain the operations of adapting a shower as a bum gun. I'll wait till they get desperate first.
Regarding the comments about getting it and developing immunity, that is likely true for the short term. Like the more common flu viruses, COVID-19 will mutate and will probably do so in rapid fashion due to the immense number of infections that will occur. None of this is good news for the human species.
You Make Your Own Luck
^ yep. Its a question of whether this now becomes annual and seasonal like the common cold or Flu.
They'll never learn, dirty bastards....

I have checked-in but it is still 50-50 whether I am allowed to fly tomorrow, and the odds are decreasing by the hour.
...still think it better to self isolate in Nakhon Nowhere than where I am now though. I am normally in and out of Bangkok within 4 hours if they let me in.
^ Troy, i think if you are ensconced with the family and can afford it, and healthcare can cover it you are best riding this through there. At least you will be there with loved ones when the reaper comes.
