SA KAEO, 28th June 2018 (NNT)-Livestock Department Interim Director-general Dr. Sorawit Thaneto, recently presided over the opening ceremony of a pineapple-for-animal feed project which is aimed at tackling an oversupply of pineapples in the East of Thailand.
Dr. Sorawit, was joined by Sa Kaeo Vice Governor Narong Nakornjinda, President of Wangnamyen Diary Cooperatives Amnuay Tongkok and others from relevant agencies during the ceremony.
In light of the oversupply of pineapples, the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives instructed the Livestock Department to address the issue by seeking cooperation from Wangnamyen Diary Cooperatives and Nikhom Rayong Agriculture Cooperative.
More than 1,000 tons of poor quality pineapples have been bought from farmers in four eastern provinces for the production of cattle feed. Dr. Sorawit claimed pineapple-based feed, despite costing 10 baht more than rice hay at 117 baht per kilogram, would enable a dairy cow to produce up to 14 kilograms of milk per day.
For one ton of dairy cow feed, 630 kilograms of pineapple will be mixed with 142 kilograms of dried grass, 133 kilograms of soybean meal, 44 kilograms of palm fruit and 51 kilograms of shredded cassava. The mixture will be fermented for seven days before it is ready to be fed to the cows.
