EEC Committee on course to turn U-Tapao airport and surroundings into aviation city

BANGKOK, 20th February 2018 (NNT) – The Eastern Economic Corridor committee is on course to turn the U-Tapao airport and its surrounding area into an aviation city within five years.

During a seminar on the eastern aviation city project, EEC secretary general Kanit Sangsubhan announced that a study on the strategic plan to implement the development of the second phase of the eastern aviation city on a 6,500-rai area of land is expected to be completed within 18 months.

Mr. Kanit said that the awaited strategic plan is aimed at ensuring the U-Tapao airport is able to offer a complete array of commercial aviation services while being connected with Don Mueang airport and Suwannaphumi airport within five years.

?He added that a study is underway alongside the feasibility study on the development of the area around U-Tapao airport, which includes a plan for a transportation network, a public utility system, shopping malls, educational institutions, hospitals and other facilities.

Mr. Kanit stated that, once the aviation city development plan is clearly devised and the design of the communication system is ready, the EEC project will be able to effectively attract more investors and hundreds of billions of baht in investment in all 10 targeted industries, which the government has been promoting.

This is a pity, the airport could have been a good research place for US Army meteorology, as they asked few years ago the Yingluck govt.

However, the opposition - who do not know what is good for Thai people - did not allow it to be agreed.

Doesn't matter who is ruling the roost at any time. Has nothing whatsoever to do with freely election regimes, or their military equivalent, or whomever.
Historically, projects such as these will always be under the scrutiny of the age old tradition of Thai elite corruption, greased palms, and the usual institutional graft.
