Rich couple hand out B8m 'angpao'

    February 15, 2018

UDON THANI: A well-to-do couple in Muang district gave the poor 8 million baht in cash as Lunar New Year gifts on Thursday.

Preecha Chairat, 68, and his wife Sannara welcomed a huge crowd of visitors and handed out red envelopes or “angpao” at their residence on Nitayo in tambon Mak Khaeng on the eve of the Lunar New Year.
The visitors queued up to receive the envelopes containing 200 baht each. Police and soldiers had arranged for the elderly, the disabled and children to be first in line.

The first recipient, Tai Noonsap, 67, arrived on a wheelchair. He was a labourer who lost his right leg in a road accident about 30 years ago.
He has received “angpao” from the couple for three years. He said he would place the envelope on his altar and pray for the good health of Mr Preecha’s family for a few months before using the money.
Nual Khakhai, 83, was there for the first time. She said she was glad that there were the rich people who liked to help the poor. At present, she and her husband received the government’s monthly allowances for the elderly worth a combined 1,700 baht.

She planned to donate part of the money and spend the rest on necessities. She wished Mr Preecha and his family good health.
Mr Preecha said he had prepared red envelopes containing 5 million baht in total and had 3 more million baht for additional handouts.
He said he gave it to workers at his sugar factory, as well as police, soldiers and the poor. He intended to give the red envelopes to everyone queuing at his house on Thursday.

Mr Preecha said he had made the donation every Lunar New Year and did not remember exactly how long he had done it. He would continue the activity as long as he could.
Mr Preecha also said he built houses for five families of disabled people and gave each 10,000 baht and rice every month. He said he liked to help people in trouble except those who brought it on themselves like those borrowing from loansharks and gambler.

He said he had a sugar factory, a hotel, a market and other properties. They are now managed by his children since he and his wife retired and now spend time pursuing other interests and donations.

People are waiting to receive red envelopes at Mr Preecha’s residence on Nitayo Road on Thursday.

What's that saying in Thai about putting the gold on the back of Buddha?

    ผู้ปิดทองหลังพระ.

Do a good deed without drawing attention to yourself.

Exactly, hit the nail on the head. Giving to charity should not be used as a way to gain face. Oh look at me, look how kind I am, look how generous I am, you can't buy your way into heaven.

Do you two really think he's altruistic?
Of course he's not. He does it for two simple reasons: 1. For the publicity, and 2. for the merit he thinks he gains in the karma thingy.

Do you really think he'd give a toss for a beggar on the street if there was no monk to tell him he'll get merit or no photographers to show his benevolence?

Hey...let him give away his money. Money no doubt gained from exploiting minimum wage workers...but that's another story...good on him for being charitable. But don't laud him for being a great human. He's not. He's a selfish individual with his own karma in mind on only one day of the year.

Who are we to judge his reasons for his philanthropy as being selfish, or otherwise.

For all we know, they might simply just be decent people, wanting to give back to people less fortunate than themselves no??

I give them the benefit of the doubt - and praise their generosity. If for no other reason, it may evoke others to do the same.

    Good on them!

If that were the case, they would do it discretely... this has all the trappings of a crass performance and assertion of status, which the receivers duly reaffirm.... very fedualistic really. Who are we to judge? The observers, the sharers of the space they inhabit, as such we have a duty to judge... they want to be observed, and for people to comment on it.

Maybe this chair is a hint at what he really wants from this publicity charity handout. A knighthood, maybe?

Didn't Jimmy Savile get knighted by the queen for his charitable good deeds?

I didn't know they had such things.

That word "charity" really has been tainted now... used as a dog whistle for saying "I'm a better person than you"; not so better any more, eh.

You're absolutely right and my cynicism may sound a bit dreary, however, if he really was philanthropic, his employees wouldn't need a handout once a year because they would already be on a fair wage. He's made his money from their sweat.
Having observed Thais, rich and poor, for years, I have noticed that many of them do tend to do good works only for the "merit" they think they gain, and in the case of entrepeneurs, for the PR. One might go to the temple and make a big donation, and then callously step over a beggar once out of the wat.

Fair play to the guy. Someone (Jack meoff)should do the same for some of Teakdoor's dregs.

    200 baht could buy

    Graceless Fawn a McDonalds
DJ Pat a Thai national park entrance fee
CSFFan a soap on a rope
Luigi a hooker on Bangsaen Beach
    Manaam a new meth pipe
Captain Nemo and David44 a bib to collect the dribble
Seekingassylum a currywurst and some pomme frites
    Dicky some new anal beads.
Chitty Chang Chang a Macclesfield to Manchester return bus ticket
