BANGKOK, 2nd February 2018 (NNT) - Chomthong District Office has managed to bring foul-smelling Bang Prathun and Sanam Chai canals back to a more acceptable aroma and is running a campaign for city cleanliness.
Residents, some of whom have lived in canalside neighborhoods for decades, started noticing that their community canals had become foul and murky. They believe the change can be attributed to the closure of Dao Khanong sluice gate and the intrusion of wastewater from other areas. But rainfall over the past few days and the opening of Dao Khanong sluice gate have diluted the filthy water.
Director of Chomthong District Office, Chotiros Laomana explained today that Bang Prathun and Sanam Chai canals flow towards the Chao Phraya River, therefore it is necessary to use the sluice gate to prevent seawater from affecting agriculture along the canals.
She added officials dredge the 106 canals in Chomthong district regularly and Chomthong District Office is also campaigning for systematic disposal of garbage among the residents.
