Small fee to enter Thai border market

The Poipet International Border Checkpoint in Banteay Meanchey province announced that authorities would charge a temporary fee to enter Thailand’s Rong Kluea market starting in February until residents obtained a border pass.

According to a statement from the checkpoint issued yesterday, the fee to enter the market will be 100 riel, or about 2.5 cents, for each visit.

Vich Oun, chief of the Poipet International Border Checkpoint, said it would be implemented from today until August 31.

“The fee to enter Rong Kluea market is only 100 riel per time because we just want to pay for the cost of printing the ticket,” he said.

Starting on September 1, Mr Oun added, permanent residents of Banteay Meanchey province could use their border pass to enter Rong Kluea market free of charge.

Mey Vanary, a resident of Poipet town, said most of the town’s residents entered the Thai market for business purposes.“Some residents who live near the border go to the market five times a day, so they really need a border pass to cross without being charged,” she said.

Earlier this year, Banteay Meanchey provincial authorities started issuing border passes for permanent residents of the province who wished to cross into Thailand to buy and sell goods. The pass will cost $5 and be valid for two years for multiple entries in and out of Thailand.

So it's only affecting Cambodians who cross over the border to the Thai market. About time to, we have to show passport at same crossing and pay both sides big money for in and out ticket.
