The dog, however, was safe after it swam back to shore.
The tragic incident happened at Ban Khamnoi dike in Tambon Khon Taek, Sangkha district on Tuesday (Aug 29).
Witnesses told rescue team that the disabled man, Chaiporn Indee, 44, a resident of Samut Prakan province, jumped into the dike after seeing his dog being swept away by fast-flowing current and was drowning.
But he couldn’t help himself as the current was strong.
Upon seeing the disabled man was drowning, another man who was later known as Prakit Wiwasuk, a village headman, jumped into the water in bid to save Chaiporn.
But he, too, could not resist the strong current. Both were swept away and drowned.
Divers found the body of Chaiporn several hours later, while the body of Prakit was retrieved last night.
