Phuket picked as role model of corruption free province

Phuket has been chosen as the model province which is free of corruption of all forms.

A memorandum of understanding was signed on Tuesday by the Government Sector’s Anti-Corruption Commission and Phuket provincial administration to designate Phuket as the role model for a corruption free province.

The event was witnessed by executives of the local governments, private organizations and chiefs of government agencies.

Phuket was chosen because it was the first province which coordinated with the Government Sector’s Anti-Corruption Commission to promote private investment on the island and to provide conveniences to business operators as well as SMEs in doing business in Phuket without demanding tea money or kickbacks

Property, taxi/tuk tuk mafia, dodgy Russian travel agents, Jet ski scammers. Phuket has it all.
Still possible for the self aware to live and work there. Just.

Went once in 1997, never again it was a crap hole even then. Not to mention picking a 'girl' up and smuggling her into a 5 star hotel, only to find out it was a bloke!

I like visiting there too, helped by having a few good friends living there who show us around.

But this doesn't change the fact that it's probably the most corrupt place in Thailand, and will forever remain that way. To say otherwise and expect anyone sane to believe it is Thainess at its best.

Never been... I anticipate it being about as appealling as Pattaya, which I finally visited, just the once, a few years back; but maybe a little less seedy.

It's actually not a bad place, as headworx points out, having friends there helps. Being street smart and keeping your wits about you is essential if you are out alone any time in the centre.
There is always an undercurrent that keeps you on your guard.

I've lived on Phuket for the past 10 years, and cannot recall a single instance where I've been subjected to a request for any form of payment that wasn't legit. We do own our home, and do not do any form of business, so undoubtably we're sheltered from commercial pressures. I've always found that doing things legally removes any potential for grief.

The island has indeed changed, particularly during the past 3-5 years with the advent of the mass (read Chinese/Russian) tourist market with what that's brought in terms of large buses taking them from hotel to venue etc. Traffic and building expansion is the most notable change.

However, important to remember that Phuket is a Province, and not a single urban area such as Pattaya etc. The scenery is still stunning, there are many quiet areas still to enjoy, the selection of shops and restaurants is probably second only to Bangkok (in Thailand), along with excellent sports facilities.

As we all understand, there are substantial differences between visiting as a tourist and actually being resident anywhere.

Experience keeps a dear school, because the fool will learn in no other. Guaranteed that bloke was forewarned, far in advance of investing his money. Thus, your sympathies would be better spent elsewhere.

It's great to set up a low threshold, reaching easy goal is motivating for the other provinces... if it means no real improvement regarding corruption, so be it, as long as they can pat each other's shoulder they're happy.

Yep. Never would I invest anything in LOS I couldn't live without. And for me, that would mean not much. And certainly not with a Thai co-investor that's for sure.
