Due to recent flooding which forced the Nakhon Si Thammarat to close down for more than a week, the Department of Airports plans to built a flood wall around the airport as a long-term solution to prevent the airport from being flooded.

Funding for the proposed project will come from 430 million baht flood rehabilitation programme and construction is expected to take about two years.

The airport was reopened for normal operations at 6 pm on Friday, but there was not a flight arriving or leaving the airport because airlines have not sold any tickets to passengers who want to fly to Nakhon Si Thammarat or to leave the province by air.

However, it is expected that service will resume as normal of Saturday.

Transport Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisit said on Friday that inspectors had checked the runway and electrical system at the Nakhon Si Thammarat airport and found it was ready for normal operations.

Regarding a new round of heavy rains in the next few days as forecast by the Weatherman, airport authorities are confident that they are capable of coping with the situation.
