FTD says claim of plastic rice in Thai pack rice sold in US is distorted

The Foreign Trade Department has asked the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society to block a video clip believed posted in the social media by an Asian community in the US claiming that Thai pack rice sold in the US market was adulterated with plastic grains.

FTD chief Mrs Duangporn Rodpayat said Wednesday that the claim was a distortion of fact, pointing out that there was no reason for Thai rice exporters to adulterate rice with plastic rice because the price of plastic is now double of rice price at 40 baht/kg compared to 20 baht/kg for rice.

She also said that plastic when burnt would melt and would not turn into blackened grains as shown in the clip.

Mrs Duangporn insisted that all the rice that were exported out of Thailand had gone through quality checks to meet the required standards. She said that the pack rice shown in the clip was an established premium brand in the US market for a long time and was the Number One brand trusted by the consumers.

She asked Thai nationals living in the US not to share the clip, saying that the spreading of the clip would further damage the reputation of Thai rice.

But plastic with a high portion of filler, which costs less than rice, would.

Many food adulteration cases in America are hoaxes by greedy and sick people wanting to sue. Glass in baby food is the most common false claim. Some will even injure their child with it.

Commerce Ministry denies rumors of poor-quality rice and canned fruits

NONTHABURI, 9 January 2017 (NNT) – The Ministry of Commerce has ordered commercial officials across the globe to dismiss online rumors of alleged poor qualities of Thai rice and canned fruits.

Commerce Minister Apiradi Tantraporn said the allegations in social media that the Hom Mali rice and canned fruits from Thailand were contaminated with some toxin and HIV virus are to be entirely dismissed as false and groundless.

She said the Thai authorities abroad have been instructed to disseminate accurate information in response to such rumors about the Hom Mali rice as in the case of that exported by Siam Grains Co., which was not contaminated as alleged.

Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP) Director General Malee Choklumlerd said the agency's office in Vancouver, Canada, had already contacted a Thai rice importer, namely Western Rice Mill, requesting the company to send emails to its customers to reaffirm its confidence in the Thai rice, especially among Asian consumers of good-quality rice from Thailand.

Meanwhile, the DITP has called on the Department of Disease Control and the Ministry of Public Health to reject the rumors that there was some HIV virus in the Thai canned fruits whereas the virus can only be transmitted from human to human.

The DITP has instructed the commercial attaches to the Thai embassies worldwide to categorically dismiss the damaging hearsay about the Thai export goods.
