Drivers urged to turn on headlights during daytime for safety

BANGKOK, 26 December 2016 (NNT) – Experts have suggested motorists to switch on headlights during the day as the practice is believed to reduce the risk of accidents by 30 percent.

The Council of Engineers reported that Thailand currently ranks first in the ASEAN region in terms of the number of road accidents, with a death rate of 38.1 per 100,000 people. The Kingdom is also among Asian countries considered most vulnerable to road accidents.

To alleviate the problem, the council has launched a project to raise public awareness of the importance of turning on headlights during the day or installing daytime running lights on vehicles. With the lights on, it is said that visibility could increase from about 670 meters to 1,400 meters, thereby lowering the chance of accidents by as much as 30 percent.

In a bid to promote this safety measure, the council is coordinating public relations activities with both public and private agencies and is looking to propose that the measure be made a regulation to be enforced during long holidays, such as New Year, when a large number of people embark on road trips across the country.

These people just make these shit statistics. 30% huh? My ass.

This headlight business is kindergarten level. Daytime? Yeah ok. Thats good. Try telling these knuckleheads to do it when its raining, or foggy, or sunrise/sunset so people can actually SEE them being idiots before its too late.

Most Thais don't even grasp that headlights are for more than just "so you can see when its dark & stuff" and has a lot to do with "so other people can see YOU"

    Beyond dumb.

Compulsory in Sweden, EU wants the same
Volvo cars automatically light up on ignition.

Headlights on low beam whenever I drive in Asia, far safer, all other traffic can see me coming, so steer clear. Missus thinks I'm wasting the battery.

After driving with my headlights on in daylight and having people blow the horn and flash lights at me, I asked about it. Was told headlights on in daylight were only for motorcades. No one else allowed.

I was in a taxi in India in pissing rain, the silly little Monkey driving did not to use the Wipers because he reckoned it would use more petrol. ????

Much the same as the retarded bint from the hire car company who last year reckons I fucked the Battery because the Handbag was charging her Phone.

On the way back from Pai a couple of years ago I was stopped at a police checkpoint and asked why I had my lights on.

I explained and the cops thought it was funny, but let me drive off with no problems.

Once, I lost my way on the Thai/Burma border north-west of Mae Hongson , inadvertently crossing over into Burma, headlights on, in light patchy mist and a slight drizzle.
Coming around a corner, lo and behold, a bunch of Thai soldiers stopped us and quizzed my Thai 'navigator' and I, accepting our 'lost the way' excuse because we had our headlights on, as a smuggler or another kind of dodgy dealer wouldn't have.

Drive on,..checked again 20 minutes later at the border propper, they timed my drive, just gave me a thumbs up as I slowed down to stop, and waved me on.

Been like that in Canada since 1990-ish. So Americans in Washington and Florida can spot the low tippers

    I think it's a fucking great idea.
So much so that I've now instructed my family to leave all the lights on in the house during the day so none of us bump into walls and shit as we go about our daily chores, activities, things and stuff.

The energy-saving concept is fairplay...People don't think enough in that realm...However, the "safety card" trumps all...

What about the twats that drive with their fog lights on? Apparently it's illegal here, similar to other countries, if the conditions do not require them.

Always do it, wife thinks wear bulbs out.

Delighted to discover I'm a VIP

Explains why traffic cops salute my "pickup" with a grin

Only Time ever stoppped in Golden Triangle with a Swedish pal

His self styled hi=so wife and mine only ones asked for ID, He foolishly expalined to light skinned his wife they were looking for Burmese girls being smuggled in , her face was a picture to rememeber, my own thought it pretty funny too.

Like wearing a crash helmet can never see a reason not to have lights on got used to it Scandanavia.

A good start would be if cars/bikes driving wrong side drunk at night were "invited " to light up, I'm not holding my breath and away from village try to avoid night driving esp
the suicide hour after dusk when lads have fargeled 100 mil of 70% Lao Khao leaving work.

100m from my house a tree was felled and left half across the rd for days, finally sawn up today after Poyai Bans family critically injured driving into at night, we all knew its there, I'm assured hewas so well "oiled' he felt nothing and will join the vegetables

I was driving with my lights on during the day but found I was in the minority. I concluded that with them off the folks behind me could clearly see when I'm breaking. On the honda wave people all in a pack around me.

I have seen for sure two fatal crashes here. Involving trucks and motorcycles. Many more crashes that one may have survived.

One was a broadside hit as a truck pulled into the airport. If I lived here full time most definitely worth having the truck. RIP to those folks.

Actually it is a bad idea to have daytime running lights as it will be difficult to tell the cars with one light from the motorcycles.

Complete bullshit, they are the best things since sliced bread, all the good ones are LED and very rarely fail, and should be compulsory on all cars, pickups, bus's and trucks. would make a vaste improvement on safety

Well, actually, he's quite correct. Extra loads on the car electrical system, powered by the engine - lights, a/c, heater, demister, wipers, radio - will increase fuel consumption.
    Jus' sayin' ...

Led daylight running lights are very low wattage and any fuel consumption change would be insignificant. If you are worried about that I suggest you turn your air con off.
