7 suspects in the killing of a handicapped bakery delivery man plead not guilty

Seven suspects charged with the fatal assaulting of a handicapped man in Lat Phrao area in May pleaded not guilty before the Criminal Court on Monday.

At the request of the defence lawyer, the court agreed to postpone the pre-trial hearing for both the defence and prosecution to examine evidences to December 19.

In the meantime, the court also approved in the inclusion the mother of the victim, Mrs Thongkham Srichan, in the prosecution’s team after both the public prosecutor and the defence lawyer did not raise objection.

Mr Anantachai Chaidet, lawyer of Mrs Thongkham, said that after all the seven suspects denied the charges, the court gave them a chance to reconsider their plea, pointing out that the ten wounds inflicted on the victim, 35-year old Somkiat Srichan, allegedly by the suspects were fatal and it was unlikely that they were perpetrated in an act of defence or out of anger.

The lawyer further said the victim’s relatives had no intention to seek revenge on the suspects as most of them were young but only wished that they repent and apologize.

The seven suspects were identified as Pirapol Yotpong-anan,21; Akkadet Tasana, 22; Monmanas Saengpo, 21; Chatuporn Chansopha, 18; Mek Polkraisorn, 19; Arin Yotpong-anan, 19 and Ms Natnicha Ritlamlert, 18.

The group allegedly broke into the house of the victim, a bakery delivery man, in Lat Phra area and fatally attacked him with knives.

Seven defendants were sentenced to between 12 and 19 years in prison for the savage murder of a disabled bread vendor in broad daylight nearly two years ago.

For the brutality of the murders, the Criminal Court sentenced four of the defendants to 18 years in prison for second-degree murder 20 months after they used knives and bricks to kill Somkiat Srichan in Bangkok’s Lat Phrao district.

Two of the four were given an additional year for trespassing. Three others in the group got 12 years for participating in the murder, one of whom was also sentenced to an additional year for trespassing. All seven were ordered to pay a combined restitution of 1.25 million baht.

Akkaradet Thatsana and Arin Yodponganan received the stiffest sentences of 19 years for killing 35-year-old Somkiat. Peerapol Yodponganan and Monmanat Sangpho received 18 years. Jatuporn Chansopha was sentenced to a dozen years for aiding in the murder plus a year for trespassing.

Suspects No. 5 and 7; Mek Polkraisorn and the only woman in the group, Natnicha Ritlamlert; were sentenced to 12 years each for being accessories to the crime.

Four of Somkiat’s murderers are sons of police officers: Peerapol, Monmanat, Mek and Arin.

Through their lawyer the family said it was satisfied with the verdict.

Only 12 to 19 years imprisonment sentencing for blatant sociopathic mindless murders?

    Rather lenient.

The lawyer for the victim's mother said they will appeal against the leniency of the sentence. They said the court did not consider the fact that the accused intended to kill the victim.

The big question is.... have they been released on bail after appealing.

Remember the 4 Thai police officers convicted of torturing a 17 year old to death, first crushing his testicles before hanging him from a tree, that were convicted, sentenced to death, and immediately freed on bail after appealing.

Guess the most important factor is just how high up their police fathers are.

What purpose does it serve the public to have these people convicted, but then to not have them serve the sentences that where handed to them??

It apportions blame as to when time comes to discuss who pays what in compensation to the deceased family members.

Although the "family" in question who were satisfied with the verdict were family members of the deceased

Its nice to see so called connected people getting their comeuppance.
Hopefully it will continue and connected people in Thailand will not be able to evade the law .
Slowly but surely, connected criminals in Thailand are now facing justice

Natnicha Ritlamlert, the 19-year-old girlfriend of 1 of the 6 suspects, turned herself in days later after a warrant was issued for her arrest. A witness said she cheered on the 6 assailants and yelled "Kill him!"

Yes. Let's not start sucking eachothers dicks just yet.....

"Their sentences were commuted after they agreed topay the victims family XXXXXXTHB"....

A family who would think nothing of allowing a disabled vulnerable relative to be out selling food.
Wouldn't be shocking to find out he was the sole breadwinner (pardon the pun) while they all sat on their ass bone idle.

    Thainess in full effect.
