I can feel the tourist industry crumbling as we speak.

It's already been forgotten by pretty much everybody.

Police yesterday confirmed the mobile phone of Koh Tao murder victim, David Miller, had been retrieved from the accommodation of a friend of the two Myanmar suspects. Today, they have further explained exactly how they found it.

Thai police are starting to deal with the many suspicions people both here and abroad have raised about the their handling of the case.

A senior police official was just on Sorayuth Suthassanachinda's evening news show on Channel 3 and he explained exactly how they found David Miller's phone. He said they knew quickly that it was missing from his body from information gained from David's friends and relatives, but this was not made public. Later, after the two suspects were detained and they confessed to the crime, police asked about the phone. One of the suspects said he had left it with a friend and when the friend was questioned he led them to the phone. He had become suspicious of the origin of the phone and he threw it away behind his living quarters. Hannah'' phone, had earlier been returned to her relatives, the officer said.

A forensics expert was also on the show and he confirmed that the evidence they had was solid.

Police yesterday confirmed the mobile phone of Koh Tao murder victim, David Miller, had been retrieved from the accommodation of one of the two Myanmar suspects.

National police chief Somyot Pumpanmuang said suspect Zaw Rim, 21, had intended to take the victim’s mobile phone for his own use, but he later found the device cannot be used in Thailand, so he smashed and discarded it in his living quarters.

Pol Col Prachum Ruangthong, superintendent of the Koh Phangan police station, said the device is a black iPhone 4, taken from the shorts pocket of Miller, 24, who was found dead on a Koh Tao beach alongside Hannah Witheridge, 23, on Sept 15.

The confirmation came as doubts spread on social media as to whether the phone was really taken from the suspects. Some pictures circulated online show a friend of Witheridge brought a mobile phone to Pol Col Prachum during the inquest.

Critics, especially those in the British press, have accused Thai authorities of bungling the probe by chasing the wrong leads. There have also been concerns the suspects are scapegoats, a claim Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha denied.

Zaw Rim and Win, both 21, have been detained in Samui prison since Saturday. Both Myanmar workers were charged with premeditated murder, rape, theft and illegal entry into Thailand.

Police said the suspects earlier admitted they had raped and killed Witheridge after they watched her and Miller, who was also killed on Sept 15, hugging and kissing.

Acting Assistant National Police Chief Pol Lt Gen Panya Mamen said police have strong forensic proof to back their case against the suspects.

The two are the culprits, not scapegoats, he said, adding that evidence in the investigation documents is confidential and disclosing it could affect the probe.

Meanwhile, Pol Col Prachum said the Koh Tao police operation centre, which was earlier set up to unravel the murder case, has been moved to Bophut police station in Koh Samui.

Eight investigators are now finishing the probe document before sending it to prosecutors, he said.

Pol Col Prachum said police will not question the suspects any more as the interrogation is complete.

The DNA test results will be compiled in the probe document, which will be sought for the pair’s indictment, he added.

Meanwhile, tourism on Koh Tao showed signs of returning to normal as many foreign travellers have come back to the island.

Tourism operators there said tourist activity has apparently picked up since police succeeded in unraveling the murder case and apprehended the suspects

It took a whole three years after the Bali bombings for tourist numbers to hit a new high.

Thai PBS actually doing some investigative reporting rather than repeating press releases. Not ideal (should have used a pig carcass) but they make their case -where is the knife, plod. No way millers cuts came from that hoe.

Right - so to be clear, they are now saying they had arrested questioned and had the confessions of these lads on the 17th September when they first produced Davids black iphone for the media?

There was never any reported DNA traces on the hoe to suggest Miller had ever been hit with it. Only the girls DNA was reported on the hoe.

Three autopsies were conducted. All the examiners concurred that Miller had died from a combination of sever blows to the head with a "blunt" object followed by drowning.

The other wounds on Miller could have been caused by any number of things. It appears that he had been in some kind of fight for his life and had been dragged into the water, either semi conscious or unconscious.

It seems quite possible that one of the corners of a digging hoe might cause wounds like the ones shown, if it was just being jabbed instead of being swung like an axe...but the lack of any DNA traces would seem to rule even that out.

We have two hoes exactly like the one shown in the videos and I've used them myself. A high swinging blow would be devastating because it's quite a heavy thing and the blade cuts deep without too much effort. (very desirable in a tool used for digging)
If you can dig trenches in rock hard soil with it, you can imagine what it would do to somebody's skull.

The demonstration of the hoe attack would explain the terrible wounds on the girl, but not on Miller. The suspects appear to be acting out an attack on the wrong victim. A bit of wire crossing in the demonstrating by the looks of things....

Wide speculation that Hannah was roofied, yet no toxicology report released as this would no doubt throw the spot light back on AC bar. Hannah drugged, taken to beach and raped, David follows to see if she is OK and killed. After rape, kill her too. No evidence that they went to the beach together after all and the CCTV was not released at the time when she would be going to the beach. What did it show and who was she with?

^ Hi Koman, it sounds like you are becoming more skeptical than your original post.

I am surprised the news report above (hoe demonstration) was not censored on Thai TV. It does go to show, that Thais are not as gullible as we think - even they are questioning the plausibility of aspects of this case. *hats off to them...

*See, the majority of Thais are decent people.

Indeed. However I would not at all be surprised if this is being led for them by a certain contingent who back the group that were forcibly ousted not too long ago. After so many public endorsements by the junta about this, it is bloodying their nose significantly.

Still find this amusing - David and the Dwarfs. All of the marks on him look like a standing fist fight yet these guys would have to be jumping in the air each time they are hitting him?

    Highly plausible

I've tried to be fairly neutral since day one but I'm quite familiar with the operations of the BIB having watched them at work on a few local cases.

I don't know what happened other than what's been reported, and I don't claim to know who the real murders are. Others claim to know all kinds of things without a shred of well authenticated and accurate information or evidence, but I was never given a crystal ball or the gift of clairvoyance, so until a really convincing case is presented, I reserve judgement. I don't happen to think something is evidence because people are talking about it on Facebook.

If the BIB had been more consistent in their statements, and maybe introduced some outside observers to authenticate the "evidence", a lot of things would be much less doubtful. Nobody would describe the investigations as textbook police work.

The constant stream of mindless Xenophobia and bullshit spouted on these forums is neither informative or helpful, but I suppose we have to live with it.. I really don't know what makes some people think their own personal experience with Thailand and Thai people (real or imagined) has to apply to everybody else.

Drowning of Belgian Man off Koh Tao Adds to Alarm About Safety of Thailand's Tourists

PHUKET: Fresh tragedy struck the holiday islands of Thailand today when a tourist from Belgium plunged to his death from a boat.

Police investigators are now trying to determine whether the man fell or was pushed and why he was not wearing a life jacket, as tourists are required by law to do.

The vessel, carrying about 30 passengers, was travelling to Koh Phangan from the smaller island of Koh Tao, where the vicious murder of British tourists Hannah Witheridge and David Miller has captured international attention since September 15.

Police from Phangan are investigating the circumstances of the manner in which the crew of the vessel, the Seatran Discovery, turned around and pulled the man from the sea. Life jackets are compulsory.

Colonel Prachoom Rungtong, Superintendent of Phangan Police Station, said that the man, aged 26, was spotted leaning over the rear of the vessel, photographing the propeller, before he fell.

''It's unclear whether his mental state has any bearing on what happened,'' the colonel said. ''We will be asking the captain why there was no safety vest and why he wasn't pulled alive from the sea.''

The investigation into the Belgian man's death comes amid growing concern about the safety and security of tourists in Thailand, following the murders on Koh Tao.

A suggestion that tourists wear wristbands, made recently by the Tourism and Sports minister, probably would not have helped. A life vest, however, might have saved his life.

Phuketwan has been given the man's name but will not identify him until we can be sure his family has been notified.

His body was taken to Koh Phangan Hospital.

^ I'm with you, mate (Koman) Sounds reasonable to me.

I don't mind those guys pointing out the faults of the Thais (or any other race of people for that matter) but I just wish they would qualify their statements by using the word "most" Thais are blah blah, rather than saying all of them..

E.g, "most Thais are jealous by nature", even the Thais themselves will admit that... no secret there ey? but not every single Thai is jealous by nature... hmmm that's just dumb, not to mention impossible.

I feel sorry for some of you guys that have Thai wives, etc.. must take offense sometimes.

This scenario is not supported by the evidence. There was her DNA on the outside of condom, but no sperm inside. It seems that they were disturbed during the act.

There was no DNA on the condom from anyone else though, so you are dismissing my speculation by speculating that the condom came from David then without a shred of evidence to point towards that?
