Asians approach death in a different way to farang. That's not to mean they don't value life any the less, it's just that to them death is not so final given their beliefs.

Translating that into the day to day actions they engage in, Asians are not so squeamish of another's suffering. I think it resolves to lack of empathy most Asians seem to have for others not of their species and probably is rooted in an innate lack of imagination or capacity for abstract thought.

DNA tests will be done in Singapore

Semen and cigarette butts seen as key to finding who killed Britons on Koh Tao

Semen found on the body of one of the two British tourists murdered on Koh Tao in Surat Thani province last Sunday will be examined in a Singapore laboratory, national police chief General Somyot Poompanmoung said yesterday.

Somyot said the DNA test would be able to identify the race, hair colour and skin colour of the person, which would help with the police investigation.

It is understood cigarette butts found at the crime scene will also be sent to Singapore for DNA analysis, although Somyot did not mention the butts in his remarks to reporters yesterday during a visit to the island.

Somyot had earlier said the authorities would ask the United States' Federal Bureau of Investigation to conduct the test, as the police's Institute of Forensic Medicine's DNA test was capable of only identifying the sex.

He said police had clues that pointed to the perpetrators of the crime being Asian men and he was "confident" they remained on the island in the Gulf of Thailand. Surveillance camera footage obtained one day after the brutal slayings showed an Asian-looking man running from the scene.

Somyot was speaking on Koh Tao, where police investigators simulated the crime using a few scenarios.

They were: the attackers followed the victims from a bar; the attackers randomly selected them after spotting them walking; with police following the route they suspect the attackers took before they killed the victims on the beach.

Nevertheless, English/American task forces wouldn't have excluded the local people, due to them being deemed above such cold-blooded crimes.

Kind of interesting. New DNA tests can actually tell color of hair and eyes with a reasonable degree of accuracy.

Didn't know that. Not that it will make any difference in this case.

Just saw an article somewhere (Daily Mail, maybe) which quoted a Thai cop as saying the deceased were known to have argued earlier in the evening preceding their murder with a "local Thai gangster" who had been hitting on the girl.

Now we've heard of this bar altercation before - a couple of days after the killings - but this is the first I've seen describing the Thai as a "gangster".

Which really begs the question if they know he's a local gangster, they must know his identity. And have from early hours. So, why was he - who looks a quite likely suspect - not been spoken to to date??????

This Bangkok Post article reports a tourist stating there were muggings just the night before in that same spot.

Yep............not exactly unheard of here. Unfortunately many tourists come to places like this with a lot of preconceptions about peace loving Buddhists etc and behave in a way that is more potentially dangerous than they realize.

If enough pressure is applied, eventually they will catch the killers. It's a fair bet that some of the locals know a lot more than they are willing to say.

Hard to believe locals wouldn't turn in killers if they knew who they were. No one wants to live on a small island with murderers on the loose. No doubt the locals are scared to death.
