    Tourist Arrivals Still Falling

    Tourist Arrivals Still Falling
    August 16, 2014

The number of international tourists arriving in Thailand in July fell 10.9% from a year earlier, according to data from the Department of Tourism, showing the industry has not recovered from the impact of prolonged political tension.

The lucrative tourism sector, which accounts for about 10% of the economy, suffered its biggest drop in visitors in June - the first full month after the army took power on May 22 in a bid to end tensions and get economic activity going again.

International arrivals in July totalled 1.91 million, compared with 1.56 million in June and 2.15 million in July 2013, according to data posted on the department's website late Friday.

Arrivals from China, the country's single biggest visitor source accounting for 18% of all tourists in July, tumbled 25.3%.

For the first seven months of the year, international arrivals totalled 13.62 million, down 10.7% from 15.26 million a year earlier, an even steeper drop than the first-half decline of 9.9%.

By region, arrivals from East Asia were down 17.6% for the first seven months of 2014 from a year earlier. Arrivals were up 3.1% from Europe and 9.6% from Africa. Declines were seen from the Americas (3.5%), the Middle East (6.9%), South Asia (10%) and Oceania (1.6%).

Arrivals from Asean, which account for 26.8% of all foreign tourists, were down 9.8%.

Among large individual markets, Malaysia accounted for 9.8% of all visitors to Thailand and arrivals through July were down 19.9% from a year earlier to 1.34 million. Visitors from Japan (5% of the total) were down 21%, South Korea (4.6% share) declined 17%, the United States (3.3% share) fell 5.2% and Australian arrivals (3.6% share) were off 1.1%.

The United Kingdom, with a 4% share of all visitors to Thailand, was one of the few large markets to record a gain, of 6.2%.

To be honest the place has fallen apart over the last 20 years.

Beaches are shite, corruption at every level, most of the Thai youth are off the planet on kitchen stuff and further proof the Chinese are running the country and they don't give a flying ..............about the short term losses.

Nice to know Chinese locusts aren't as many as before. They are good at wrecking perfectly nice places.

Thailand is a solid slab of clay that is sinking into it's self and all these non Thai selfish prats running the place are just fucking it up even more.

I love Thai people. Have done so since the day I landed here but what I am seeing today is so sad.

Just goes to show that Malaysia's and Indonesia's policy to inhibit the yellow peril was right all along.

Sad Thailand could not see the writing on the wall.

We booked our flights with Thai two week's ago paid £605 each not flying until last Friday of October.
Thai obviously have very few passengers booking for that flight because today price is £736.
You can't expect tourist to carry on booking holidays to a country that seems to want a civil war every few years.
I am the same as LT love Thailand love Thai people but they do like attracting the wrong kind of news headline's to the country's image as a tourist destination.

Yeh, my bro has taken advantage of the attractive airfares, and booked a holiday over Xmas. Apparently, if you book a flight in with Air Asia, domestic flights are at near giveaway prices.

Not true. As with Vegas or Dubai, Thailand is feeling the crush of the global depression that started in 2009.

Well it is summer in the Northern Hemisphere
Wait until winter ( December ) the migrating Siberian birds will be perching themselves once again on the tourist beaches of Thailand.
Well their summer holidays to Crimea are not as comfortable as a winter retreat.
Now that the Siberians cannot access EU food.
    USA sanctions.
Stock up on EU food in December, they will fly all the way out there to buy it from your Pattaya Deli.

    Well,

Thailand's not the only Southeast Asian country with beaches. Political unrest, no wonder tourism has dropped off considerably.

The Visa changed would have effected the amount of tourists arrivals .
A person who did the Visa run every two weeks would have been logged as 26 arrivals a year .

Agreed. There was also a crackdown on Cambodians and Burmese and it has had an impact as well.

Did they come for the flooding? Nothing says patong like a giant turd floating down Rat U.
