Plane crashes in Laos, 39 people killed

(Reuters) - An aircraft crashed into the Mekong river in Laos on Wednesday and 39 people were killed, media reported.
A Lao Airlines plane on an internal flight from the capital, Vientiane, to the south of the country, crashed into the Mekong in the late afternoon, China's Xinhua state news agency said, citing the airline.
A television station in neighboring Thailand said 39 people had been killed. Airline and government officials in Laos were not immediately available for comment.

it has a fleet of just 14 planes, mostly propeller-driven.
You have got to love this quote as if the fact they are propeller driven implies they are old. Why even bother to mention it?

Mostly propeller-driven like the new Airbus military transport, as an example.

Looks like a French husband and wife, and Aussie brothers or son and father passed away in the incident.

    From the news link given above in the OP;
"..flying in stormy weather crashed into the Mekong river in southern Laos on Wednesday, ........Typhoon Nari

The virtually new ATR-72 turboprop plane flying from....Vientiane crashed at about 4.10 p.m. (0910 GMT) just eight kilometers (five miles) short of its destination Pakse.."

49 Believed Dead in Plane Crash in Laos - ABC News

"A passenger manifest faxed by the airline listed 44 people: 17 Lao, seven French, five Australians, five Thais, three Koreans, two Vietnamese and one person each from Canada, China, Malaysia, Taiwan and the United States. Korean, French and Thai officials confirmed the totals for their nationalities."

Back in '89 I got the last seat on the only plane cleared to fly out of Wellington NZ, on to LA during a violent thunderstorm.
One of he freakiest experiences flying I've ever had, passengers cheered and clapped when we levelled off above the clouds!

Another time coming into land at Wellington airport the pilot aborted the landing, and up we went, circled and came down starboard wing down,..due to high winds. After landing we all gratefully cheered the pilot! Freaky!

I've habitually checked the weather before boarding ever since and have flight insurance incase I cancel at the last minute.

    Worry too much? Dunno.

    RIP all you folk.

That's awful. Never flown in Lao, always thought it seemed a bit pricey.

Pricey compared to Thailand but not Australia. I have done about a dozen flights with them and all have been excellent.

Doing an approach in clouds when things are bumpy is always a challenge. Expect this will likely be pilot error as they got too low too soon, crashing 8 km from the airport.

Thanks Eire for the manifest. We have friends from Australia traveling in Laos at the moment and had a few moments of worry. Condolences to the families of all those on board.

    My thoughts too.

Flown on that airline four times in Lao, never worried, but the weather was great each time.

    Another masterful piece of journalism?

Communist Laos, landlocked between Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar and China, is a closed country with a secretive one-party government.

    Closed country, my foot!

It's one of the most open countries in Asia!

Sorry for all involved or linked. Is there some reasoning in whether or not to fly in Laos? Route 13 is bad for land travel. Is there not some reasoning over the air as well. Or am I fool to even think as such. I can only hope that this may prevent future fups in flight. I guess I will have to be the one to say the weather is to rough for flight.

That plane shouldn't have been out in that weather I feel.

Sad to read about the Aussie family on there, tragic.
