14y old Brit dies after Dinner on Phuket (vomit, heart)

    Ethan Jade Lascelles Williams
    18 August 2013

A 14 year-old English boy, Ethan Jade Lascelles Williams, on holiday in Phuket, died from a severe allergic reaction, apparently to cashew nuts he ate during dinner in Patong.

After eating the nuts, he started to vomit and developed difficulty breathing. His parents rushed him to Patong Hospital at around 6pm.
Sirichai Silpa-archa MD, Director of Patong Hospital, explained to The Phuket News “The doctor treated him with epinephrine (adrenaline). However, it was too late.

He could not breathe and had hypotension [very low blood pressure] and passed away soon afterwards.
“His medical history showed that he suffered from asthma, so his parents had regular asthma medication but they had none for anaphylaxis [severe allergic reaction].”

Pol Capt Patthapi Srichai of Kathu Police said, “We are waiting for the parents to come back to show their passports and identification for the child. We will then ask them if they have any questions regarding the case.”

Capt Patthapi added that if the parents decided that they wanted an autopsy to be performed, the body will need to be sent to the Police Hospital in Bangkok

"hypotension"... nice try to avoid saying "heart enlargement" ?

wow... the guy didnt have a nuts-allergy...
but as he ate some, its blamed now onto such things...

why do the parents have to decide, that he is sent for autopsy ?
surely, they wont do that (grieve, mourning...)

    he has to be autopsied...

Hypotension is low blood pressure. Quite common in shock.

Where did it say he didn't have a nut allergy? He probably did, but the parents didn't know the word for cashew nuts (ba-mah-maweng) and he ingested some - maybe in an Indian curry or some such dish.

i understand, nuts allergy can be tested in the blood (IGE antibodies or so)...
they didnt do this test... its not confirmed, that it was an allergy...

its also very rare, that - in the western world - such a super severe allergy wouldnt have been discovered earlier, as almost every cereal stuff, chocolates and cookies contain nuts, particularly cashew nuts...

with reactions to nuts, there is in very most cases a skin rash (hives) coming along... the picture doesnt show anything nor does the report say it...

people/parents with serious nuts allergy do have their antidotes with them...
the article tries to imply he had a nut allergy, though its effectively NOT said...

also, the cashew nuts in thai dishes are easily to identify...

if you have severe reactions to dishes, you will make clear its
    - ordered apropriately (and you will know what the thai name is)
    - SPOT THOSE NUTS at first glance...

    dont you think ?

if an allergy was suspected, its (im no medical, but...) suprising (to me) that no anti-histamine was given...

Agree , no need to lower Teakdoor to Asia's poor standards.

Poor bugger probably didn't even know he had an allergy to cashew nuts....

Tree nuts, such as walnuts, Brazil nuts and cashews, are common allergens, or substances that cause an allergic reaction. Allergens, while harmless in most people, cause the immune system to overreact in people who are allergic to them. The immune response may be mild, causing a rash, itchy eyes or throat tightness, or it may be serious, resulting in anaphylaxis. Symptoms of anaphylaxis could include rash, itchy eyes or throat tightness, as well as difficulty breathing, nausea and vomiting, a drop in blood pressure and even a loss of consciousness. If you lose consciousness, experience difficulty breathing or your blood pressure drops after eating cashews, call 911 immediately, as this is a medical emergency. If you have other, milder symptoms, make an appointment to see an allergy specialist.

I escorted an English lady, travelling with some old friends, around Thailand on her holiday a few years back- she had a very severe allergy to peanuts. It fell to Mrs sab & I to ensure absolutely no peanuts, peanut oil etc in her food- potential life and death stuff. Managed it though, she's still alive.

You know how it goes in Thailand, right?
    No peanuts. "Yes"
    Peanuts "Yes"
    Do you unnerstand "Yes"
    Do you not unnerstand "Yes"
    Are you thick? "Yees"

Jeez, I was a nervous wreck.

apparently there was absolutely nothing known about the 14 year old having a nuts allergy...
almost all such allergies are detected between the age 2 and 4 (wiki)...
sure, because almost all food - as you state - contains nuts...

it would have been known, if he had one...
the article doesnt say this - not at all...
a blood test, which (for what i understand) could prove it, wasnt done...
the cause of death is ? what they write on the death certificate ?
    "possibly... likely..."

he was just 14... there is truly the need to determine the cause of death precisely...

people cant just drop dead here and everyone says "rip" and moves on...
    thats bizarre..

and btw this negligent killings have to stop
its murder, if they dont go to the source of it...

Umm, think again. As I found out quite recently, hospitals don't even necessarily tell you when they know you're dying.

i think a patient NEEDS to be informed about their condition - particularly in hospitals...

one can always ask for their "medical file" and they have to hand it to you...
though, they might just not do that - even in the west...
...and you can ask till doomsday...

Just because it is not written in an article does not mean he was not known or did not happen.

Yep it is very sad when one so young dies unexpectedly, but keep this in mind. How many young Thai children die in Thailand everyday? Almost never makes the news and almost never appears on Teakdoor. This kid was British it's the only reason anybody had even heard of this story.
I'm not saying it was Aliens, but it was Aliens!
